Does it seem like things are snarkier at times around here (GD etc mainly) lately?

I go to GD and I am amazed at threads locked because people are calling people out. We're all at least hopefully on the same team aren't we? We want the Rethugs out of office? I know I do.

So what is the deal that lately (not that there hasn't always been a good debate atmosphere in GD etc.) there seems to be more calling out? Personal attacks? I mean, I remember that one could post there and be challenged on ideas, but just called out like I've seen?

I think the mods deserve a raise (I know it is totally volunteer) for the job they do trying to moderate the forums when they are like that. I know that we've all had about as much as we can possibly stand of the B*shite regime and their lies and the unexplainable challenges they put forth etc.

I'm not just ranting, I'm really thinking that an election is coming, and while I don't think we need to be locksteppers, we'll leave that to the other side, I think that some common courtesy would be appreciated by all. Maybe the "count to 30" before you post in anger would be a good thing to do? It's saved me at work to do that. I used to reply to someone who snarked at me, but now I think, what did they really mean? Did they understand what I wanted?

In the end, this is DU and part of that is lively debate and discussion on issues that we all hold dear to our hearts. There have been a lot of contentious issues that have come and gone and some still remain that DU'ers haven't seen eye to eye on. That is GREAT! We need to see things from other's perspectives. That is what freedom is about.

I'm just talking about saying so and so is a such and such because they think this or that.

:hi: everyone

8. Disagreement is one thing
deliberate snarkiness and personal attacks are not good things and sure, people get emotional and do that, I was just amazed recently at some things that were going on in GD and threads locked. Mods deserve a round of applause :applause: for trying to deal with what all goes on there.

4. It does seem that way - lots of dogpiles and thinly veiled (if at all) personal attacks
It seems like there is a higher than normal amount of personal animosity: posters or groups of posters who are at war with other posters or groups, and miss no opportunity to launch an attack...

15. I agree . , ,
the problem with writing out our thoughts is that we don't have any voice inflection to go along with what we say and so much can be misconstrued in other people's minds. I have some thoughts sometime that I really would like to openly discuss - or at least find out if anyone else is thinking along the same lines - but i can't even discuss it. sigh.

you're right about how discouraged and dismayed and downright disheartened we all are about the shape of things in this country. it is so outrageously sad - for us as well as the rest of the world.

19. another good point
and when in doubt, it may be that the other person is not snarking. but when a thread title is a call out (which violates the rules anyway) that is pretty much clear what the OP meant. I'm sure there is much more that I am not privy to not hanging out in GD much, but that and several other just battles, and my own experiences there lately with being leaped on by one side or another just seems different to me.

I don't know what it is, and voice inflection, etc. is all not something captured in a post.

it would be nice to be able to get together in one large group and then be able to sort out those who are just ruminating from those who are just downright nasty and angry at the world. i would love to be able to 'voice' questions - totally from innocence on my part and then hear genuine thoughtful responses to such.
o well - another place, another time perchance?:pals:

16. i think there are many reasons for it
One of the biggest reasons imho is that if you post on a political board like this chances are you are passionate if not militant about your beliefs..And since very few Freepers hang out here we turn on each other to fill the void.We crave an adversary i think.

Now some people are just thick skinned and reactionary and that causes snark on occasion
Sometimes I think snark comes from ones own insecurities and pent up anger..ie sucky job ,crappy home life, loneliness, and even just a persons need to blow off steam..It just sucks that they feel the need to drag others down with them..
I normally avoid gd..

21. GD is so weird
You can tell before clicking a topic if it is going erupt into a flamewar. But what surprises me is how one thing is said and the entire thread goes up in flames. You can't have a lively debate with other "adults" in there, it just turns Jr High School with all the cliques, bullies, nerds, outsiders etc...

Pathetic!

thank God I don't post in GD, I don't know if I can handle the name-calling and BS.

27. The difference in GD and the Lounge is t hat..
GD swipes are usually not personal--based more on disagreement on issues than on dislike for the poster (with exceptions, of course).

In the lounge, the snark is usually personal and meant to be hurtful. Many times it's grounded in real-life differences. Sometimes the history of lounge hostilities goes back years. :eyes:

That's why, usually, GD differences are short-lived, but Lounge issues seem to last for years.

The worst I've ever seen, though, was during the primary in 2004. God was it a mess. DU had a five-warnings-and-you're-banned rule back then, and people were trying to provoke others into breaking the rules so that they'd get banned. Also, people were actually digging up posts in the archives to alert on, in an attempt to get their adversaries banned. None of it was personal...it was all about "You don't like my candidate, and I don't like yours, so screw you." It was the ugliest period in DU history. I'm betting that, since DU has more than tripled in size since then, that it's going to be even uglier this primary season. :scared:

31. I think that...
GD isn't anywhere near as cliquish, and that's why most disagreements are short-lived. I said MOST. :D

But in the lounge, grudges last forever. The "innocent" posts that are meant to jab a particular, targeted DUer while pulling in DUers who don't know the background of a situation have become the biggest nuissance.

(Don't know if you read Salin's post a couple of months ago--she's a well-respected long-time DUer who posted about it and said that she was considering never coming back to the lounge because of the nastiness that was going on at that time. She's always been above lounge controversy, and she identified every problem in the lounge in that post, even though she's not in the PM-circuit or posting on the off-DU boards where many of the problems originated.)

It wasn't always like this in the lounge. Salin recognized it. Others have, too, and are very uncomfortable/unhappy about it.

But I guess that's just the way it is.

34. I've been spending a lot less time on DU lately for that very reason.
People, for whatever reason, just seem to be nasty to each other. And with the upcoming election, I can't see it getting better anytime soon. The Lounge is, at times, like being back in junior high, and GD, on the rare occasion that I enter, is just shrieky-hysterical. My final year of college is coming up, which means graduate school, visa, and internship applications atop a normal courseload. At this point, I really don't need any additional stress.

I made a few posts today that sank like stones. I was bored and thought to myself: Is anyone paying attention to me?
