There were always guys hanging out in front of stores that would buy us a case of beer and/or liquor for like $5.

First time I bought myself was at a party store in the city. I think I was 17 then.

13. 16 or 17.
There was a juke joint roadhouse way out in the country.
The Clover Club.
I'll never forget it.

The saying was if you could see over the bar they'd sell it to you.
And the bar wasn't all that high.

14. 18...
Beer and wine were legal for 18 yr olds, so around my 18th birthday, i went with a couple of friends to a restaurant called "Annabelle's", and ordered a couple of pitchers of "Lemonade Spritzer", which was absolutely refreshing, but really stole my legs...

29. You phrased your question "when you WERE first purchased alcohol."
Edited on Wed Jul-11-07 08:19 AM by Zavulon
I thought you meant when someone bought one for you, as in perhaps parents who let underage kids drink at their house. Now that I know what you meant, the answer is 14 or 15.

By the way, ThomCat - the first person to respond to your question - answered "at a family event: 4." How did he avoid your brilliant riposte?

Word got around that there was a guy at this liquor store who'd sell to pretty much anybody. I went in one afternoon and got a six-pack of 16-ounce Buds. (If I remember right, that night was the first time I got drunk.)

Coupla weeks later, the store was boarded up. :)

My date (my now husband) was a little annoyed because he was still 20.
There is no way that I would have tried to buy alcohol before it was legal. At 29, I often still get carded.

There was a liquor store a few blocks from my college, and they'd sell anything to anybody. I started college at 16 (and I looked 12), and even though at that time the legal age was 21, I was never carded and could buy all the sloe gin and 121-proof rum I wanted.

Of course, I eventually paid for this sin by having to call Ralph on the big white phone for hours at a time.

I hitchhiked with a friend out to the junction, dolled myself up at the gas station and walked into the strip club next door. I told them at the bar that I was 18 (even though the drinking age was 21 no one cared) and purchased a beer.

I didn't buy a single drink after the first one that night. Everyone purchased drinks for me the rest of the night. I was even offered a job. (Which I didn't take since I couldn't prove that I was 18.)

At a nightclub that had no problem with underage drinking...until the cops raided it one night. A friend and I hid in the bathroom, and strangely, the cops didn't search it.

It was freely available at home if I wanted it.

44. 18-the early 80s were an easy time for underage drinking
The old Michigan driver's licenses were also easy to alter.

When I was at WMU in Kalamazoo, there were several establishments that catered to the underage drinker-the main one was Coral Gables, the local branch of a chain of bars. Most frats were still modeling themselves after Delta Tau Chi, so they always served underage rushees, pledges and girls. I had friends who worked in stores that sold alcohol, and there was a store in Grand Rapids I could always get it at.

Michigan raised the drinking age back to 21 sometime around 1977 or 78. They still weren't enforcing it really well in 1983-4. The law also recognized that if you were 18-20 and drinking, you were a legal adult who was responsible for his or her own actions. The bar or store wasn't, as you knew you were breaking the law.
