What was the first car your family owned?
This one looks sort of like ours but it seems to me those wings were much higher, in the back.

'57 Ford Wagon

Sort of like the wings on this one, but straight up, like the tail of an airplane.

Maybe I'm off by the year??

We didn't have a car until I was 10 yrs. old. We walked everywhere.

1. can't remember the first, it was a sedan, light blue, probably a ford
the car of my childhood was a 64 ford country sedan

ours was white with grey interior, 3 speed on the column and had positraction. I learned to drive in it and spent lots o' fun times out at the river "4 wheeling" amongs the trucks and dune buggies.

2. That's cool you got to learn drive in it!
I wasn't allowed to drive any of my Dad's cars until he became
legally blind and no one else wanted to chauffer him around.

But I learned to drive in my oldest bro's car, a '64(?)
Chevy Impala with a column shift. My SIL took me. ;)

The earliest car in my memory is a red station wagon - I don't even know the make. Model year would be mid to late 60s, I guess.

5. Probably a '46 Buick? Brand new.

Grandpa was the only car owner in our family for years.
He sold Buicks and Cadillacs.
I'm guessing the '46 was the first post-war model.

Nice!

They have a car club that meets near me every Sat.

It's a mini car show. Sort of fun to see them restored.

I ran Scotch in the radiator for antifreeze once.
We got an unusual freeze in Tuscaloosa and the auto stores ran out of antifreeze.
It worked and smelled kinda nice too.

I even used the engine crank handle once when the battery went flat.

36. My parents were in the service, and then in Iowa.
I know they pulled a trailer to their first Army post--Aberdeen Proving Ground--from central Illinois. Don't know what kind of vehicle they pulled it with, though. After the service, they moved to Davenport, IA. There were city buses, and I know my mom used them some. But my dad drove to work--in what, I don't know.

The exciting moment for us was when I was 5 and my dad got a new 64 Corvair--his first really new car. He loves that car--still has it. And in good condition. Probably worth a lot!!

It's a maroon convertible. He doesn't drive it much, but takes it out every once in a while to keep "the moving parts moving" as he puts it. He takes it to car shows, and people are AMAZED when he tells 'em it's a "one-owner". My mom once told me he thinks it'll be part of our inheritances--my sibs and me. It's still shiny and nice. He did some restoration work on it a few years ago.

It is a beautiful car. And I still remember the first time I rode in it, when I was 5.

27. When I came along
we had a '52 Olds Holiday 88. This is a 98, but they were quite similar.

I'd guess your memory's distoring the fins a bit. Ford was never big in the fin craze of the late '50s; the largest they went in vertical fins was on the '57 and '58 models. In '59 they went to a rolled fin with integral back-up lights. The '60, like in your second photo, had rather large horizontal fins, but in '61 they went to a smaller, angled fin. In '62 they dropped fins altogether for an aerodynamic, rounded rear fender. Those cars did pretty well in NASCAR.

I couldn't find a picture though. I hated riding in that car.

Because my brother and I were the youngest, we always got stuck in

window and I'd complain and be sick from the fumes! That was on long trips. :puke:

Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 09:24 PM by Breeze54
Mustang Sally Lyrics

Artist: The Gadjits

Mustang Sally, guess you better slow your mustang down.
Mustang Sally, baby , guess you better slow your mustang down.
You've been running all over the town .
Oh, I guess I'll have to put your flat feet on the ground.

All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride
One of these early mornings,
You gonna be wiping your weeping eyes.

I bought you a brand new mustang... 'bout nineteen sixty five.
Now you come around signifying a woman,
girl you don't wanna let me ride.
Mustang Sally, guess you better slow your mustang down.
You been running all over the town now.
I guess you gotta put your flat feet on the ground.

All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
One of these early mornings,
I'm gonna be wiping your weeping eyes.
