Poll question: Poll on Tattoos
Tattoos always make me wonder about the story behind them. I don't have any tattoos, and I know I never will, in part because I am 100% certain I would get tired of having one particular design and would wish I could change or delete it, within, oh, about five minutes (that's just my personality). Plus, hey, I hit 40 last year, and I don't really want anymore marks on my skin. :) On the other hand, I know that many people are crazy about their tats. When I see somebody with tattoo/s, I often wonder how s/he is feeling about it. Do they still love it? Do they regret it? Do they want more?

I'm not judging in any way -- I know it's a totally personal/subjective thing. I just find it interesting.

Thanks! :hi:

I was actually going to get a pair back in May but that plan fell through (long story).

4. My ex-husband had my name tattooed on his arm.
I told him that someday he would regret. After we divorced he married two more times. I'm sure his wives hated being reminded of me all the time.

12. I don't have any myself and no desire to get any
But I find many of them compelling and beautiful on others. I knew a guy who had a dragon tattooed across his shoulders - the head draped down one arm and the tail wrapped around the other. It was in gorgeous colors and he was dark skinned which really made it stand out. It was just breathtaking.

I like hearing the stories of people's tattoos and why they chose them. They really can be beautiful art.

13. I have one, which I love, but have no plans to get more.
My sister and I got matching ones that we felt symbolized our relationship, ethnic heritage and religious beliefs. However, we got them in different colors and on different parts of our bodies.

Mine is on my lower back, so I rarely see it myself!

14. Don't have any yet....
I've considered getting something small and inconspicuous, but the irreversibility bothers me. I've had a couple of henna tattoos to play with the idea.

20. FWIW: Here's my thoughts on the "irreversibility" issue
You should pick something that you know you will be happy with. Good choices are things that represent your fundamental beliefs or ethnicity. For example: A friend of mine had her Native American tribe's emblem tatooed on her ankle. Because, as she put it, "When I'm 80 years old, I'm still going to be Native American."

Small and inconspicuous is good, if you are still nervous about it.

And another thing to consider, scars are irreversible also (in many cases). If you are injured in an accident should you obsess about the scar for the rest of your life? I have a scar on my face from when I took a fall as a baby, a scar on my hand from playing "harpoon" as a child, stretch marks all over my boobs & hips from when my body exploded with puberty, not to mention countless moles, freckles, etc. To me, a tatoo, something you choose, is a gift you can give your body.

25. All good points of view...
My numerous scars all have stories- Some of which I'm actually kind of proud of.

My heritage is kind of muddled, and not something that I really identify with so that's pretty much out.

I've considered something to commemorate my fairly-late-in-life coming out, but in a way that goes AGAINST my beliefs since I refuse to be defined by who I go to bed with. It's iffy, but overall I think it would be the wrong choice for me.

Honestly, my thoughts consistently come back to one character: Woodstock from the Peanuts strips. Woodstock had such a passive, Zen-like quality about him (her?) that I've always identified with...

15. I have none
Mainly because I haven't seen an artist to freehand one for me. I have this thing about picking a tattoo from a book.

I have ideas, just need them drawn.

29. I'm not a Communist either - but the hammer and sickle have always
been the symbol of "Workers of the World Unite!" The USSR just co-opted a popular symbol.

This one is different - it will look like this:

19. I have four
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 12:09 PM by DaveTheWave
There's really only one that I'd like to have something done about. It's a noticeable marijuana leaf on my right forearm. It doesn't bother me or even professionals I do work for but I've recently gotten involved in a sports league for handicapped children and I don't like younger kids seeing it.

21. I've got a Japanese symbol on my ankle
It means "spirit" and I really do love it.

There's another one that I want but I just can't decide where to put it. It's another kanji symbol meaning "peace." I got it, in henna, on the underside of my forearm (near my wrist) at a concert once. It was very cool while it lasted.

The smallest one, on my stomach, it's my old cat Jules.
I have two bigger ones on my back that I could do without though.

I hope to get another in August. I waited a year between them all to make sure I still liked the design I had picked out.

28. I have a whole bunch
The total number is going down, though, as the sleeves take shape.

I like/love the majority of them, the one I wasn't crazy about is in the process of getting covered up, and I only have one other that has just one tiny thing I'll someday get around to changing. I've been obsessed with tattoos since I was a little girl. I used to bug the hell out of our biker neighbor in tx to show me his, and nat geo was great, I used to hunt through it looking for pictures of people with tattoos or other body mods. It's a good thing my two big brother's grew up to be tattoo artists!! I even worked in a shop with them for 3 years (it was fun, but, man, made me feel like a kid again being bossed around by them).

They don't really "mean" anything to me, I just think they are pretty. I found, for me, once I stopped agonizing over meaning with tattoos, I gravitated to ones that are much more aesthetically pleasing, and I love them just as much. The only one that I could say really means anything is the one with my kids name in it.
