3. I'm not familiar with either band
but I hope it was Flogging Molly, so they can name their next tour Flogging Cadillacs.

12. I love them both

Ironically, even though I think I like Flogging Molly better than Dropkick Murphys, I have two DKM CDs and no FM CDs yet.

(DKMs do a really cool cover of the traditional Irish folk song, "Fields of Athenry," on their CD Blackout.)

17. "Tessie" EP
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 12:02 PM by BlueDogDemocratNH
"Fields of Athenry" also shows up on the "Tessie" ep released in 2004. It's not easy to find this outside of the Boston area, since it is a Red Sox thing (proceeds went to the team charity). There are two versions of "Tessie", a turn of the last century Sox fight song that was re-writen by DKM; "Nutty", which is a juiced up version of the old Boston Bruins television theme song, which was itself a riff on the Nutcracker; "Fields"; and some forgettable acoustic song.

Interestingly, the three Sox players who sing backup on "Tessie" are no longer with the club (Johnny Damon, Lenny DiNardo, Bronson Arroyo).

16. Oh.
Thanks. Who's Tommy Makem? :eyes:

I am familiar with the Ramones. Celtic punk sounds like an interesting sub-genre.

Drop-Kick Murphys. Flogging Molly. I'll go see if I like the sound of either.

:hi:

(You don't really have to tell me who Tommy Makem is, I don't care that much.)

5. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it is.
"Sunny Side of the Street," right?

Ironic considering in no sane world would Shane MacGowan be allowed to drive.

8. I briefly caught it
I've been laid up for a couple days recovering from an appendectomy. Saw the ad on the Top 100 movies thing last night (along with the commercial for the upcoming "Final Cut" of "Blade Runner"). The song grabbed my attention, and immediately I thought it sounded like The Pogues (or MacGowan). The song could be right. It's been awhile since I heard it. I think I have it on my hard drive somewhere.

And you're probably right about how he shouldn't be anywhere near an automobile.

6. Thanks for putting that link in your sig line, Fighting Irish!
I'm listening to Guy James right now! BTW, I hope your right about the commercial. I don't listen to the Pogues so I don't care if they sell Cadillacs.

7. Even Joe Strummer licensed a Clash song to Jaguar
It's tough enough for obscure musicians to get paid these days. If you wrote it, and you own the rights to it, I say you can do whatever you please with it.

If it allows them to make more music, or go without a day job for a few more months, I say more power to 'em.

9. well, since the Violent Femmes are selling Wendy's hamburgers now
nothing will surprise me from here on out. All good music will be whored, and none will be spared. I really think the worst point was the one where they had the boomer couple reading the Allen Ginsberg poem while driving the SUV and as far as I could tell grinning to each other about their former idealism. That was puke-worthy.

18. Meh, so what?
I'm a big fan of both bands. Anything they can do to get their music to the masses and get paid doing so is OK in my book. The whole concept of your music in commercials being some sort of "sell-out" is kinda dated. Up-and-coming bands today want nothing more than to be on a VW commercial.

19. I used to be the same way re: "sellout"
but after having been on the songwriter side of the equation, I would do almost anything to get my stuff heard. If that meant licensing it for commercial use, so be it. In fact I did license a minute-long instrumental loop of one song to a website about five years ago.

Case in point: Nick Drake. After the song "Pink Moon" was used in a VW commercial, he sold more records the following year than he had in the previous 25+ years COMBINED. He gained a whole new generation of fans, even though he'd been dead for a quarter century. And it didn't invalidate his music one iota.
