Wow, that's a lot! Did you move around a lot when you were a kid?

I've only lived in two states, North Carolina for 25 years and Georgia for the last 6.

8. Wow!!!
I had the exact opposite experience as you. I lived in the same house in rural NC until I left for college right before my 18th birthday. There were a lot of kids that I went to school with for 13 years!

My SO moved around a lot when he was a child too (he lived on four continents before high school). I think we decided there are advantages and disadvantages to both.

10. It takes a certain type to love it. I loved it. My sister hated it. Ironically, I have now lived in
the same state for 6 years, and the same house for 4 (first time EVER) and my sister has been moving about every 6 months. I am so itching to move! Born under a wanderin' star.

California, Oregon, Washington State, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Texas, Lousiana, Mississipi

I think I've been everywhere else. My dad was a public school teacher and in the 70's we would travel the US on educational camping trips in a big old plymouth station wagon with the trundel (sp?) seat in the back :) Lots of very cool memories.

Though he also said, at the same time, something about a seven-mile-long snake, so perhaps he's not entirely the best choice to quote here.

39. I'm secretly working on it
Interesting, I visited three-quarters of the them before Alaska was even admitted to the Union. My Mom made me keep diaries during those early trips. When I reread them years later I remembered every location I wrote about, and discovered I had been in some states I didn't even know I had visited. Today, I have a visual image or anecdote for every state I visited. Thanks Mom.

20. 14, I think...it depends on how you define "visited".
I remember 14, but I'm not counting the state I was born in
or any of the states I was driven across to arrive at the state
I grew up in.

And how do we count DC?

22. I would include any state whose borders you have physically been inside of, on land.
At least that's what I did. For example, I inclued Virginia but I've only driven through there, I've never stayed there any length of time.

As for DC...well...I guess I would say 50+1 (someone upthread said 27+1 for this purpose).

56. Interesting situation
I'm not sure, because that situation hasn't happened to me yet. Whenever I've been in an airport, I've also spent time in that city. The only layover flight I've ever had was in Charlotte, NC, but I grew up in North Carolina, so that state is already included in my list anyway.

But going by my rule upthread, you were inside of Pennsylvania's borders and you were on land, so I would say yes, include it. However, I'm sure that's subject to debate.

35. Don't count the "through" states, just the ones you visited for a purpose
I learned that rule from a friend who was married to a private jet pilot. They had a competition to see who could visit all fifty states first, complete with a map and pink and blue push pins. Eight months after the wedding, the pilot was killed in a collision.

25. I have to list them to know...
I count these as definites that I have "visited" in at least some small degree:

Maryland
Virginia
District of Columbia (which should count as a state)
Pennsylvania
Delaware
New Jersey
New York
Connecticut
Rhode Island
Massachussetts
New Hampshire
Vermont
Maine
North Carolina
South Carolina
Georgia
Florida
Alabama
Mississippi
West Virginia
Ohio
Tennessee
Kentucky
Louisiana
Wisconsin
New Mexico
Oklahoma

I once had a connecting flight in St Louis, but I'm not sure that counts as a visit to MO.

I was born in Colorado, but I remember nothing about it. And when my parents moved back to the DC area, I was just a baby; so I don't really remember driving through Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. I figure if I don't remember it, it doesn't really count.

Nevada
Oklahoma
Louisiana
Florida
Arizona

A couple of brief stops at O'Hare in Chicago, but let's face it - if it's an airport, it doesn't really count.

This is what I get for being born in a huge state like Texas. You could literally live your whole live in someplace like Texas or California and never set foot over the state line, and you could die without feeling deprived. But yes, I do love to visit other states once in a while.

Unless you include "states I've driven through but didn't set foot outside the vehicle", which I don't. Then it would be more like 35-40.

I find the people that talk the most shit about a particular region of the country (ie, the Northeast) have been to the fewest places out of anyone.

New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida. And Ontario, which is the only time I've been out of the U.S.

Edit: I've technically been in D.C., too, but only the tiny sliver on the Capital Beltway's Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
