My sister passed away last night

I've posted about my sister a few times, in threads concerning mental illness in GD. She was 42, and had suffered from schitzophrenia since she was 21. She also was an uncontrolled diabetic and became morbidly obese over the years, mostly due to medications she was taking, and because her mental illness made it impossible for her to control her eating. However, what killed her was undiagnosed cancer and respiratory failure. She had been admitted to ICU on Tuesday, after an ultrasound revealed metastasized cancer filling her abdomen and chest. She passed away after her lungs got too weak to keep her breathing on her own (she had a Do Not Resusitate order signed the day before). She went quickly and quietly, which is the best thing we could have hoped for, at this point.

Although I am saddened by her passing, I can't think but it is best for her. She is no longer in pain, she no longer is tortured by the voices she heard.

Please keep my mom in your thoughts, as she is the one grieving the most.

My uncle John died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, in 1983. He also had schizophrenia. We shared a birthday and a couple years ago, I outlived him. It's an awful thing, but you're right; it sounds as though your sister suffered greatly, and at least she is at peace.

If she was suffering, than you are probably right that it was for the best. But still, doesn't mean that you won't be grieving with your family for quite some time. Be strong for your mother.

I have a cousin who is a schizophrenic, who never married, and never had children. She lives in modest circumstances in Los Angeles. I am in touch with her mother, my aunt, in the San Francisco area.

I haven't seen this woman since the 1960s, and prefer to keep her in my mind as a beautiful young maid of honor at my first wedding.

I have your sister, and both you and your mother, in my thoughts today.

There is not going to be a funeral for my sister. She will be cremated, and when my mom passes (hopefully a very long time from now), she wil be buried with my mom and dad (who is already passed away and buried at the veteran's memorial cemetary). My aunt was schitzophrenic and had diabetes and an Alzheimer's-related dementia. We adored each other -- my parents and I were her caregivers for almost a year -- and while I mourned her loss, a larger part of me was thankful she finally was at peace. It's an odd situation to be in.
