Parents Upset After Students Watch Python Eat Bunny In Classroom
<snip>

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Whether an after-school activity was an educational lesson or a disturbing demonstration is being debated at a Westside school where a group of students watched as a python devoured a bunny.

Cameras rolled inside a Trinity Christian Academy as a python struck, killed and ate a rabbit in a classroom crowded with students.

The video was posted on YouTube.com, showing the supervised demonstration at the school with students wearing miniature, fake snakes around their necks.

After placing a large python on floor, a man removes a rabbit from a cage and baits it for the snake, moving it from side to side and then releasing it seconds before the snake strikes out at the smaller animal.

"This was the biology teacher, and he asked the kids if they wanted to see it. Everyone said yes, the kid brought in the snake and they did it. There was nothing wrong with it," said student Brittney Brown.

Some Trinity parents said they were disgusted after viewing the footage, and they let the administration know.

According to the school's administrator, several angry e-mails came into the school about the video.

However, some argue that what the students witnessed in the school's classroom was just nature at work.

2. Baiting a snake with a rabbit is supposed to be educational?

Snakes need to eat, but do kids really need to learn how to wiggle small mammals in front of reptiles?

7. 7th grade
My science teacher had a python and he used to feed it rats. BUT, because he didn't want the snake to get hurt by the rat, he'd kill the rat first. And I'll tell you how.... (Don't read further if you don't want to know....)

He had this handy little tool he'd created that was like a noose with a handle, and he'd strangle the little bastards (wasn't strong enough to break their necks when he'd close the loop). He would wait to feed the python until after class and invite students to attend, so students were not forced to watch. I'm comfortable enough with my child's ability to make a decision in that instance.

Just some food for thought. Oh, wait.... :evilfrown:

9. Graphic!
I had a friend that had a burmese python and he used to feed it rabbits. He would whack the rabbit's head on a brick and stun it before he tossed it into the cage. Pretty gruesome.

12. I'm assuming these were high school kids...
As long as they had the option of not watching, I don't see what the problem is. The snake's got to eat, after all.

That said, I don't think I'd want to watch. Poor bunny.

13. You have to remember the Jacksonville area is very red in a red state.
Actually I'm surprised that any parents complained at all. I am assuming they are all gun toting, card carrying members of the NRA. Having a baby bunny sucked up and chomped by a python would seem to me to be right up their alley.
