What is your favorite San Francisco treat?
Mission burritos. El Ferolito, at the 24th St. & Mission Bart Station. Also there is an ice cream place in Noe Valley that has been there since, oh I don't know the thirties or something, good ice cream, can't remember the name.

47. I LOVE Rice-a-Roni!!
Particularly the beef flavored kind.

Every time I go to San Francisco, I can never find a restaurant that serves it. They all look at me like I'm weird.

11. Sad, most of San Francisco's White Russian businesses have closed...
as the old immigrant owners aged and died. Guess the next generation weren't interested in carrying on the business. Genuine bummer!

Park Presidio Bakery on Clement Street, when I scored the best piroshki in the world is no more, too.

28. Polly Ann is even lessor known and most natives don't even know about it
Polly Ann Ice Cream Parlor opened in the Sunset in 1955. Back in the early eighties, I used to live three blocks away and was a regular customer. I used to stroll the three blocks to visit with my old dog because all dogs were given free cones; he loved them.

http://www.outsidelands.org/polly_ann_ice_cream.php

Flavors

Polly Ann boasts a collection of over FIVE HUNDRED homemade flavors. Fifty-four flavors are available daily. Visitors will find endless variations of all the traditional flavors as well as some more unique flavors not available at any ordinary ice cream parlor. Take a look at how many different versions of chocolate ice cream Polly Ann makes! And if you think of a flavor Polly Ann doesn't make, tell Charlie, and he'll go about making it for you.

41. Or hoof it across the street to Specs'
Spec's is hidden away across Columbus from Vesuvio in the short alley (Alder). Fine little bar for sure. First thing you notice is the sheer volume of (for lack of a better word) crap on the walls. Fun stuff to look at while you're waiting for a drink.

What you see inside is more than just a snapshot from a single period or culture. Browsing the walls and ceilings exposes one to a broad swath of San Francisco history that changes its gist and period with every movement of the eye. There's stuff from the 70's that boomers can relate to. There are relics from the 60's that ex-hippies can appreciate. There's city-specific history from World War II that your parents might have fond memories of. Check out the old artifacts from the Sutro baths, and you'll see things that might even give your grandparents the warm-and-fuzzies. Bohemian to Boomer, and everyone between, is equally represented.

Even though a similar collection of artifacts could no doubt be amassed, its haphazard assembly and mishmash arrangement weave a bizarre quilt of history whose evolution over a period of 40 or more years can't be faked. Everywhere you look, there are pictures, papers, scribblings....some framed, some not. Some are tacked to the walls at the corners, displaying a gradual yellowing that only age can bring about and a soft curvature that's only created by decades of gentle gravitational pull. It seems that more recent placements of items have had respect for what existed there before, creating a delightful asymmetry that bears more witness to history than it does decorative talent.

It's a fine little bar that is hidden just well enough away to prevent tourists from accidentally tumbling in and spoiling the day. Drinks are fair, too. ;)
