LORD OF THE RINGS star wants to direct FANTASTIC FOUR
Sean Astin thinks he's the guy to see cosmic rays

A Galaxia, a Brazilian website specializing in genre entertainment, landed a pretty big exclusive today with their interview with LORD OF THE RINGS star Sean Astin. The man who brought Samwise Gamgee to life in three RINGS films spoke with a reporter from SET Magazine and revealed that he is under consideration to direct the live-action FANTASTIC FOUR film.

According to Astin (who was coaxed to reveal which mystery project he was in the running for), his ideal candidates for Reed Richards and Johnny Storm are George Clooney and Orlando Bloom, respectively. "I got a meeting scheduled but I can't talk about it yet," Astin told the reporter. Astin has directed episodes of JEREMIAH and ANGEL.

2. Whatever happened to the original F4 movie from the early 90s?
Did it just never get released, or what? I know it was completed, but I've never seen it anywhere.

4. Roger Corman made it

And Marvel held up its release...for several reason, one of which was that it was awful. You can usually find bootlegs of the movie at most comic conventions.

6. Do a search on KaZaA
You can find the whole thing there. It was never released in theaters or on video, thankfully. You can also find bootleg copies at sci-fi/comic conventions.

3. Wow - does he have any credentials?
Will there be any movies in the next five years that don't have Orlando Bloom in them? Not that I'm complaining, but sheesh, the guy is everywhere.

Though I guess that even if Astin has no real credentials, he couldn't do any worse than anyone's done before on FF stuff.

5. He directed a short film
That's on the LOTR: Two Towers' Extended Edition DVDs. It was not good. He should hoan his skills on small projects before screwing up a beloved comic book franchise.

7. I agree.........
but he's got 'juice' right now and as such will be allowed to do anything he wants.

I was frankly quite surprised by how bad his short film was considering the people and resources he had around him at the time....not to mention that he's been involved in filmmaking for like 20 years.

8. My first thought when I saw the thread was "Please God, not Sean Astin."
Sigh.

The short film was really self-indulgent and awful but the "making of" bit was pretty funny. Andy Serkis goes on a massive power trip rising from car park attendant to assistant director in a series of ruthless maneuvers.

Now if Andy Serkis wanted to direct something...
