6. Speaking of Townes Van Zandt, where's that other Stones country cover in this poll?
Edited on Fri May-11-07 11:28 AM by SteppingRazor
"Dead Flowers" is absolutely outstanding (though Van Zandt's original is even better, imho)

7. I think "Dead Flowers" was a Jagger/Richards original...
...that Townes covered. It's on his CD "Road Songs".

11. It's a great song.
Here's an interview with Townes where he talks about the song:

13. thankyou for the links greendog
I liked the interview with Townes...wish I had a song to get me out of speeding tickets! :D

I also enjoyed his description of how the song came to him...every time I hear it it puts me in another place. I listened to it on a road trip from SF Bay Area to Philadelphia and back last Summer...great music.

2. I say it's "I'll Cry Instead", just over "Far Away Eyes"

3. i voted faraway eyes but, this one is my personal fave ---
Seems like 10 years ago
Though today my mind is slow
Me and Mickey Craig were running west from Idaho
Robbed a bank to get some bread
Seems like 15 men lay dead
In a path that led us straight to Santa Rosa

Now and then ol' Mick'd say
Boy at home you should of stayed
Than to follow me and learn the life of looking back
But he'd spit and slap his side
Just to see if he's alive
Then he'd sing his banjo song of Santa Rosa

He said whoa-oh, singing oh Santa Rosa
Whoa-oh, high and low-oh-oo
Then one day, sang ol' Craig,
I'll be free to go my way
And be standing by the bay at Santa Rosa

Now one time late at night
Mickey lit no fire light
Cause he feared the posse close behind might flush us out
But he picked a bit 'fore sleep
To the tune of Cripple Creek
He was murdered by a man from Santa Rosa

And he sang whoa-oh, singing oh Santa Rosa
whoa-oh, singing oh Santa Rosa
whoa-oh, high and low-o-o
Til I come once again with my banjo pickin' friend
We'll be oh high and low in Santa Rosa

4. "Act Naturally"
The Beatles knew of the greatness of Buck Owens.

Just ahead of "Far Away Eyes"

5. "Four Hours Out"- Richmond Fontaine
Edited on Fri May-11-07 11:11 AM by enigmatic
No contest.

4 hours out, but I can't go back there
To A-Frames and quick build strip malls
And those panelled walls
Will become a distillery again under everyone's focus

13 cities, 7 years
Always uncertain, still unclear
It's a never ending haul of movement
Where nothing appeared right to me
It was barely in focus at all

4 hours out
Maybe my hair and blood will be against the
windshield
But I don't think I could get there either
And the people there will be the same
Knowing I couldn't make it alone
That I couldn't make it away
A-Frames will rise and the bricks will fall
But it'll be the same
Because I'm always the same

13 cities, 7 years
Always uncertain, still unclear
A never-ending haul of movement
Where nothing appeared except
13 cities, 7 years...

This poll is shameful without any Gram Parsons

and there's some connection there.
