Wine connoisseurs, I would like your help please.
So, I bought my mom these really nice wine glasses for Mother's Day, and I want to buy a nice wine to go with them

Mom is kind of a wine snob, but she does like Yellow Tail because it's cheap. :silly:

She likes red wine; Merlot, or shiraz. I'd like to buy a nice wine, I was hoping to spend $30 or under since I already have the wine glasses.

Any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate your input. :D

1. I can recommend a yummy pinot noir...
Erath Vineyards in Oregon makes a mean pinot. Don't let the screw cap fool you...it is tasty, and in your price range too!

6. Another suggestion....
Shingleback makes an AMAZING Shiraz (I was rereading your post and you noted she liked that). Again, in your price range, heck you may be able to pick up both for $30 total.

Oh - and I like the gift certificate that gopsux suggested. It is fun to pick it out too....

2. I will try.
Argentina creates many very young affordable and yet very good wines.
I like the Malbecs.I can get a good one for under 12$ normally.
You might want to get her a gift certificate to a wine shop.
Half the fun of being a wine snob is picking out the wine.

4. I thought about, the gift certificate
But because we're having Mother's Day on Friday night (because my mom leaves to see her folks in AZ on Sunday morning), I thought it would be fun to give her a bottle and then she could enjoy it then.

And I know I could just get her a bottle of Yellow Tail and she would be happy, I just want do something fun. :7

Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll get a leg pic as thanks.:rofl::rofl:

9. The story is kind of nice, too.
It's about how the wine grown in Chile is from the original roots imported from France years and years and years ago. Everywhere else, some disease (phylloxera, I think) killed off all the original rootstock and the vines are somehow different. Only Chile was immune to the disease, for some reason.

That's all the wording on the cool bottle.

15. Quinta do Crasto 2004 Douro Red Reserva Old Vines
Well rated, around $30.

My personal favorite, though harder to find, is Habitat Red 2002. It's a 2002 Napa, organic, and impossible to go wrong with.

19. The Habitat 2002 Red
has fantastic legs and nose. It's about $20, too.

My brother is a TOTAL wine snob. He thinks the finer Stag's Leap is table winee. He was tres impressed with it.

20. You know, Barefoot Vineyards actually makes some really nice wines
for bargain basement prices (about $6 in my local grocery store). There was a Lounge thread a couple of months back where someone was looking for some good, cheap wine, and several Loungers chimed in with the suggestion of Barefoot. I had never had it before, but was impressed with the first bottle, and have since consumed more bottles of Barefoot than I care to recall! It sounds like your Mom can't be TOO much of a snob if she admits she likes Yellow Tail. You can buy 4 bottles and still be "under budget"...

The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are very nice varieties of reds..

Loire reds or whites

Pepper Bridge Vineyard 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent wine, but unless you can get them to give it to you at the price I paid, it's over your budget.

http://www.pepperbridge.com/

And Reininger has some excellent red wines also, that you can get for $30 or less.

How about treating mom to a day at a winery? A nice lunch, taste some wines, get her a bottle to take home.

A great Mother's Day!

34. A nice Franciscan Merlot can be had for under $30-
Also good, but with not as much body, would be a Sutter Home "White Zinfandel"--excellent flavor on both; Sutter Home's Zin is practically a trademark item, and Franciscan's Merlot is always excellent.
