So there's one kind of bizarre person in each of my classes
It's weird - it always seems to work that way. I'm taking four classes right now - in each of them is someone who is really rather irritating.

Class #1 - Miss Know-It-All. She sits at the very front of the room and speaks out loud during the entire time the professor is talking, saying things like, "Oh, yes," "Of course," "Probably because of such-and-such..." "Absolutely right," etc. It's incredibly grating and would drive me nuts if I were the instructor (they must get used to it).

Class #2 - Miss Donkey-Laugh. She's one of those women who sort of barks out laughter, quite loudly and in an attention-getting manner. It's not a natural laugh - more of a "look at me - I recognize the joke" sort of way. Our professor has a witty sense of humor so she often says things that cause the class to chuckle - Miss Donkey-Laugh does not chuckle, she brays. She also makes what she thinks are witty remarks - they usually aren't and in the course of all this, she misses half the material and ends up asking questions about things that just got explained 5 minutes ago.

Class #3 is Miss Nonstop Talker. She's one of those people who cannot stop talking for a minute but whe doesn't really say anything. I feel bad for the people who sit next to her - she starts in as soon as they arrive - "Hi, did you do the homework, what did you get for number 2, I wasn't sure what she was looking for, I googled it but all I found was this article, I printed it but I don't think that's what she wanted, it said a citation, did you find a citation, I spilled water in my backpack, what are you reading, I like to read, I'm reading such-and-such right now, I'm almost done, did you get number 2, I googled it but I'm not sure what she wanted...."

Class #4 - Miss Insecure. I made the mistake of sitting next to her on the first day and she's clung to me ever since. Despite what I say about these people, I do have compassion for others and I don't dislike any of them - I just find their mannerisms grating. This lady is totally insecure and she's a close talker. She laughs at everything in a sort of nervous way, even when the subject is not funny at all. And she leans in close and makes a remark about virtually everything that occurs in class - she doesn't speak low so it sort of booms in my ear. I've been unable to finagle a seat where she can't figure out how to get next to me.

I just find it kind of an interesting sociological phenomena. :P

1. What about "Miss OMIGOD I feel old around these chattering kids"?
Was there one of those in any of your classes?
:P

2. Nah, there's a bunch of us old bags
As a matter of fact, all of the above are probably around my age. Community college - we've got a good mix of ages so I don't feel like a total misfit (not that I would anyway - I'm immune to feeling out of place :P ).

3. I could be described as the Miss Know it all!!!...although i just recently realized this!!
I have always excelled at school...I have always set at the very front of the call and anytime the instructor has asked a question for the class I have supplied an answer. I recently asked my BF why after 4 years of night classes at the local community college I have yet to make any friends. He of course gave me this answer, You are the Know-It-All that no body likes. After wondering my entire life why I was never one of the group, I now know!!

6. Well, that's not precisely like this woman
I'm probably seen as a know-it-all - I always have my hand up to answer any questions. Fuck it - I'm not going to pretend I don't know and the material was right there for all of us to learn - if the others didn't bother to read or pay attention, that's not my fault.

But this woman just lobs out these remarks - they don't answer anything, in fact there's no question being asked. It's like a running commentary of these, "Oh, I know that" sorts of things. Really strange and distracting.

As for being the know-it-all that nobody likes - screw that. I would think we'd all be adult enough by the time we take college classes that we realize that's what we're there for.

4. How about wild-eyed crazy guy?
That was me in college. I'd rush into class a little late, directly after a ten mile run, still in my running clothes and dripping sweat, and then I'd sit down madly scribbling notes in my chicken-scratch second-grader handwriting, and I'd only talk to argue with the professor or teaching assistant over some point that was often only related to the day's topic in a marginal or parenthetical way, usually by exclaiming "Crock!" or something equally inappropriate.

And I wondered why I was lonely...

5. OK, I confess.
I am #2 -- at least the laughter part. I just have a loud, cackly laugh. It's my grandmother's laugh, actually. It's really not an attempt at getting attention, it's just that some people laugh loud. Viva la difference!

Peace.

9. I have a really close friend who has a laugh like that
And I love her and love her laugh. But with her you can tell it's genuine - with this woman, you can tell it's not. All her mannerisms are obvious attention-getters - she reminds me of my oldest sister who was again someone I loved dearly but who just couldn't stand not to be the center of attention and chose sort of irritating ways to accomplish it.

I'm not trying to be nasty to anyone, either. I don't dislike any of these people and chat with all of them socially in and out of class (okay, I admit I kind of avoid Miss Nonstop - she tires me out). I just find it interesting. :hi:

8. Oh my god. That reminds me of grad school. We had the same people in all of the
classes because it was a small program so I had to put up with the annoying ones in every single class. There was one guy who only went by one name (like Sting or Cher) who was kinda like your #1 Miss-Know-It-All. Except that he knew nothing. But he acted like he was at a tent revival or something, always ready with a "Right on!" or "Exactly!" or "Fascinating! Wow!" every time the instructor said anything. I'm sure at first it's an ego boost for the teacher but it got INCREDIBLY annoying after about 10 minutes.

Then there was the diva. She thought what she was saying would sound more intelligent if she spoke in a super affected, enunciated voice. It may have fooled some people, but if you really listened to what she was saying, she was dolt. I was in a multi-discipline art masters program, so most of our class projects ended up being akin to performance art since there were visual artists, filmmakers, actors, musicians, writers, and dancers all in the same class. And her pieces were always the most insufferable, self-indulgent crap where she would *always* cast herself as some kind of earth-mother/goddess character. :eyes:

11. I think we should get a sociology credit for just being there
The assortment of people is really fun to observe - and community college adds a nifty dimension because you have people from all kinds of situations and backgrounds. Fascinating! :hi:

12. So....all the annoying offenders are women? Hm.
Do you go to an all-female college?

13. You caught that, huh?
I realized it as I was writing it but it's not so unusual - I'm taking paralegal courses and the majority of the people in the classes are women. I think there are only one or two guys in any of my 3 paralegal classes.

The other class is about an even mix but it just so happens that Miss Insecure is the one who stands out.

14. I switched from an engineering major to a biology major...
In one of my engineering classes there were only two woman, and one of them dropped out. The other was sorta mean.

That was when I said to myself, "Uh-oh, I'll never meet any women this way."

I don't know if things are different now.

16. I like your descriptions. Very amusing.

Too bad these classes aren't like an episode of "Survivor", where they can be booted off b/c they don't fit in right, ie. "The tribe has spoken. You must now leave.". :D

Oh well. Hang in there and I'm sure you'll continue to be amused and annoyed by your little sociological phenomena...I mean classes.

:hi:  You're so awesome for going for it. I'm proud of you, gf! :loveya:
