Saturday Food Erotica (Dial-up warning):
Edited on Sat Apr-28-07 12:22 PM by Call Me Wesley
Since I got everything for making sushi as an early birthday gift, I gave it a try today:

That's all what I need:

Dishes again:

Knives:

Boiling the vegetables:

Drink sake:

Prepare nori leaf:

Add rice:

(Add vegetables for some vegan sushi, use smoked salmon for the others - but no pics.)

Roll:

Outcome:

Enjoy with a miso soup, and that's what I'm going to do right now.

11. I'll spare you the play by play, but essentially,
he's in the middle of making the miso soup, while taking time out to admire his new sushi knife ("It cuts through stuff like a razor!") and pondering whether to give me chocksticks or a fork, knife and spoon. (ENOUGH ALREADY! I'll eat with my fingers and slurp out of the bow!)

Even as I type this, I'm certain I'm disrupting his "soup zen." :spray:

25. Sushi, Miso & Saki oh my!!
Great pics as always! Now where's a  smilie when I need one? My mouth is soooooo watering here...even this early it looks really really good. :)

Personally prefer Plum Wine over Saki by a little bit but I LOVE Sushi, Miso and warmed up Saki. I've never tried to make Sushi or Miso myself though. Is it difficult? If it's to too difficult or pricey it would be worth picking up some basics and giving it a try. :)

Where we are now my sushi/Japanese food addiction has to be limited to mostly what the local market or Chinese restaurant carries... which is not much at all. At least I can get fresh clams and occasionally fresh oysters up here so it's not completely unbearable. :D

26. It was very good.
I don't make the Miso paste myself but bought it, and it's not pricey at all. The soup was just one vegetable bouillon, two tablespoons of Miso paste, some lemon grass and chives and a few shrimps added.

The sushi itself isn't hard to make either. Here's a good link: http://www.sushifaq.com/homesushi/howtomakesushiathomemaki.htm

The only hard part is handling the rice, since it's quite sticky. I let the finished rolls cool off (the rice should still be lukewarm when rolling) and then cut it, which was easier to do. Make sure you have a really sharp knife that you hold under water before cutting.

And nothing about it is pricey (except good Sake and the Japanese knives, of course.) I even saw that you can buy a whole Sushi kit.

I have to try Plum Wine next time I order something. :hi:

Although our local grocery might have the Miso paste and ingredients I'd be surprised. I'll check and if not I'll check our local health food co-op. If not there either there's always online. :)

I've watched the rolls being made before and they always make it look so easy, which always makes me wonder if it's not ya kno'? ;) Sharp knives are mandatory for any work in the kitchen and it looks like those new knives you got are beauties. My DH is a bug about "good" knives. I just want a sharp one and when he starts going off on cold quenching my eyes glaze over. :boring:

Plum Wine is probably my favorite wine. It's good warm or cold. We've made a few batches of Dandelion and Summer Mead that came out really good but now that we have a plum tree in our back yard I'm hoping to try and make some Plum wine (or mead) and see how that comes out. I figure it's got to be easier then either Dandelion or Summer Mead which is a bit labor intensive. :)

Hope you enjoy your new sushi stuff and knives... it sounds like you're really enjoying your birthday week. :D
