Speaking of toilet paper, in Mexico (I found out recently) and I've
heard in Russia, and undoubtedly other countries, they don't put toilet paper in the john, but in a trash can next to the john.

Are the pipes there smaller?

1. I've had to do that in the rural part of a certain Medtierranean country...
(hint- 'the rain falls mainly on the plain' there); there'll be this rinky-dink toilet, with frail little pipes going out, and a big plastic bucket nearby for depositing the 'wipings'. Still, its not as bad as a turkish-style 'toilet'.

4. squat on the floor toilets. Usually with a rinse cup or faucet. But they all had paper too when I
was there. Some hotels had western toilets but with a little spigot an the center back of the seat.

They all had a very civilized way to do the shower - the whole room was tiled and water just went everywhere - you could clean the whole bathroom while you showered with the hand held sprayer. I liked that.

5. Turkish toilet:
Not limited to Turkey, not by a long shot.

..no sitting down- just squat- then hose yourself off afterwards.

3. True for Mexico - at least the north.
Hard habit to get used to - I always hope I haven't caused damage when I forget.

6. some places yes, others no....
It depends on how the waste water is disposed of. Places with septic tanks usually ask that you not fill their tanks with paper, which takes a LONG time to decompose.

8. It's true.
Even in the Cancun walmart there are little wastebaskets next to the toilets. At our B&B, the hosts regularly took out our dirty tp basket. I found it gruesome but the natives don't think twice about it.
