How do you get rid of a woodpecker??
An obnoxious woodpecker has become the bane of my existence.

It perches on a gutter and drills the roof outside my bedroom very early in the morning, waking me up.

Is there any way to make it leave so I can get my sleep?? x(

1. why would you want to?
they are such beautiful birds.

but you could shoot it or feed it poisoned bird seed.

2. I don't want to kill it!
I just want it to peck elsewhere.

3. You can try tacking some sticky paper to the roof
in the spot that he generally perches and pecks. They don't like tacky, sticky surfaces. There are also products like this:

that perform a similar function. Conversely, you can try to trap the bird and then call Animal Control to have it taken and released somewhere else.

5. It's spring - he's just announcing his territory
We have a red-headed woodpecker who, each spring, uses our aluminum chimney cap for just this purpose. It can be alarming and annoying at times, but he should calm down in a week or two (ours always does).

6. put something on the places he likes to perch
like they do in cities to keep pigeons off of statues and building.
I've seen things that look like small metal rods or thick wires, attached to a small ball of putty or clay. put a couple of these on his perching spots with the wires poking outward, and he wont want to sit there.

19. She's really adorable when she wants to be - just seems her eyes are always glowing
Which verifies my belief that Evita really is the spawn of satan. Somewhere underneath all that grey hair you'd probably find the mark of the beast on her

She looks a little less deadly in this photo

My trick? ( I don't want to call it a "little' trick ifyouknowwhatI'msayin') There is an old NFL films footage of Vince Lombardi diagramming the sweep play "You get a seal here and here!" Works every time.

13. Actually, I wonder if he's doing you a favor...
He's detected something in your roof; wonder if you should call an exterminator, in case of termites.

20. Bingo - You likely have insects in there
If he is trying to drill a hole in your roof. He is trying to get to a tasty breakfast of whatever it is thats eating your house. Take care of the bugs and this pest will move on.

16. She would be shooting at the house.
Further, the town might not allow firearms to be shot in a residential neighborhood.

18. I think she should keep the weapon by her bed
when the woodpecker starts pecking

she should blast it from the bed, through the house

that way, she can simply go right back to sleep

15. Put a woodpecker "snack" in the yard.
They're a block of seads, peanuts and other avian goodies. They go in a wire block-shaped basket and hang in a tree or something.

17. I'll trade my rodent for your woodpecker
At least the woodpecker I could take care of with my .12 gauge and some birdshot.*

*disclaimer - the above line is merely facetious. I do not go around shooting innocent wildlife. I sic my cat on it. :hide:

21. You don't have a woodpecker problem: you have an insect infestation.
Sent you a PM.

Seriously, Woodies eat BUGS, not wood. If you have a woodpecker, it's eating bugs that might be eating your house. Non-toxic soap based insecticide used sparingly. Woodies are the "good guys."
