If for some reason you ever want to really feel betrayed...
...search Facebook, select "Very Conservative", and see how many of your friends pop up. Shudder.

"Central Virginia is a creepy place. One has to make creepy friends."

6. Me, too.
I even had a political conversation yesterday with my neighbor, who's not a Republican, but also not well-tuned to politics, so that was annoying me a bit.

7. Yeah, it's mos def not *just* political
It's the things like saying "oh, Imus isn't racist--he was *just kidding*".

Or "I believe in gay rights, not just them getting married." Or, my favorite, "Evolution is just a theory...ID is just as scientific as Darwin!!"

Etc. These are actual quotes, btw. I don't associate with the people who uttered them.

13. Damn.
My neighbor was saying, "I don't like what Imus said, but I'm afraid this is anti-free speech."

I kept telling her about the difference between free speech and hate speech, especially within the context of the situation, but I don't know if I got through to her.

14. I've encountered that argument before, and I always say...
"No one is stopping you from using it. If you don't see what it's racist, though, that is in itself part of the problem."

The other thing my friend pointed out, is why do white people *want* to use that language?

16. Exactly, saying it is not a crime unless inciting a riot.
And my neighbor actually compared MSNBC dropping Imus to Bush and the Patriot Act (and everything else) in terms of "censorship."

I guess the obvious government/corporation difference didn't occur to her.

17. I'm just saddened by the lack of critical thinking
I don't care if he's a "shock jock". That doesn't absolve him of the responsibility from knowing the history and power of the words he uses.

And, no, just because rappers use it doesn't mean you can use it too.

I've heard a lot of stoopid this week on campus...

friend of mine changed hers from "very conservative" to "moderate" completely out of left (or right) field. That must have been some youth retreat.

I've never met one who could satisfactorily explain their philosophy to me. It strikes me as sort of political nihilism.

Very popular among the college set, or the high schoolers who would otherwise lose touch with their college friends set. I'm pretty sure something in that last sentence oughtta be hyphenated...

20. Breakdown of my Facebook friends' political views:
- 3 "Very Conservative" (only one of those was really a surprise/disappointment, though)
- 36 "Conservative"
- 54 "Moderate"
- 82 "Liberal"
- 21 "Very Liberal"
So yeah, a little more than half my Facebook friends identify as either "liberal" or "very liberal." :) (For the record, I listed myself as "liberal," although that may have to change soon...I'm leaning more towards the hard left every day under this administration.)

And, for the sake of completeness (and because I'm totally procrastinating):
- 5 "Apathetic"
- 2 "Libertarian"
- 12 "Other"

31. Ouch. You're a stronger person than I am!
:hi: I don't think I'd be able to handle all the conservatism, lol. I'm from a very conservative area of the country, and so going to college has been pretty nice for me...I'd say this town is pretty conservative, but being a college campus means you're slightly less likely to get lynched for speaking out against Il Douche. ;)

(Also, congrats on 100+ posts...and a belated welcome to DU!) :hi:

42. Yeah, I know what you mean.
Call me shallow, but political conservatism is a real turn-off for me. (Environmental conservatism...well now, that's a different story! ;) lol.) I think I mentioned in another thread a few days ago about how I met this guy a while back at lunch (he was a friend of a friend and he didn't have anyone to eat with, so we invited him to sit with us), and he was good-looking, smart, funny, and he seemed to have a great personality...but then he revealed that he was a Republican and he was pulling for Mitt Romney. Of course I didn't leave the table or anything like that, and he's eaten with us a few more times since then and it's been relatively enjoyable, but that info definitely caused me to cross him off my "potential date" list. Shallow? Yeah, maybe. Doesn't mean I can't be friends with him, though...but I'm pretty sure a relationship wouldn't work.

as long as they weren't FAR right, and were intelligent enough that i could debate them without pissing them off, it might work. I would almost find libertarians more irritating, but I've never dated one, so I don't know.
