Does South Park EVER go after Conservatives?
Edited on Fri Apr-13-07 01:53 PM by southpaw
I've never really been a fan of South Park... in fact, my exposure to the show has been sporadic over the years. I perceive the show to have a serious right wing/conservative slant that is demonstrated mostly by the public figures they ridicule.

A friend who claims to watch the show regularly insists that South Park has attacked right wing figures numerous times, but can't give me any examples other than Mel Gibson. In fact, she gets testy if I push for further examples, like I'm calling her a liar or something.

If anyone knows of any examples of South Park making fun of a right winger, please share them with me. Thanks.

1. The "pray the gay away" camps...
Edited on Fri Apr-13-07 02:00 PM by JonathanChance
In the "24" spoof, Bush was portrayed as a clueless idiot.

Cheney in the 9/11 conspiracy episode...

Bush's desire to launch an attack on heaven in the "ladder to heaven" episode.

That Episode also made fun of the uber patriotic songs coming out of the country scene.

3. So they have actually portrayed Bush and Cheney?
Wow. I wouldn't have imagined that.

I understand that they are both Libertarians, though one source I looked at said that Stone was a registered republican.

Still, they strike me as more libertarian than hard-core righties. I seem to recall Big Gay Al as a positive, if stereotyped, gay character.

19. Yep, and not in an especially favorable light either
Check out Cheney:

Aside from mormons, catholics, the religious right, rednecks, gun nuts, big business, the military, and Mel Gibson, South Park never goes after conservatives.

2. The Mormon episode?

I agree with you. I used to watch South Park fairly regularly and don't recall any right wing attacks.

The South Park Movie, however, was entirely anti-republican. I'm not sure if it was intentional (since Kyle's mom is a supposedly a liberal), but the movie exhibited so much of what is wrong with republicans.

4. They do, but why do you care?
Change the channel.. Fuck, the world is bigger than left vs. right. Get some fresh air.

And I think Jon Stewart is a liberal.

5. Thanks for your input.
As I said, I don't tend to watch the show. My OP was about a debate I'm having with a friend who insists that they skewer both sides equally.

6. The Easter Ep
mocked American Catholic League leader Bill Donahue and the pope, both conservatives.

They've also targeted the Catholic Church as a whole, the "gay conversion" movement, President Bush and Cheney, and the Boy Scouts.

Usually, South Park is pretty equal opportunity. It is extremism, hypocracy and lack of perspective they satirize, both left and right.

There was the ladder to heaven episode where Bush says he wants to bomb heaven and the reporter asks him if he's high or just incredibly stupid. Bush says "I assure you, I am not high".

17. The creators are right-wingers of the freep variety. They freely admit this.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker are mean-spirited nihilistic rightwingers, not religious or social conservatives. There are many different varieties of right-wing wackos.

18. Many, many, many times...
"They're comin' right for us!" is the first thing that springs to mind, making fun of gun-crazy yahoos.

Or how about "They took our jobs!" making fun of xenophobic, anti-immigrant rhetoric?

I'm sure there's dozens upon dozens of other examples.

And, of course, there's also Team America, their puppet movie, which skewered uber-patriotic
war hawks.

Not to mention the South Park movie, which did the same.

There are SO many examples of South Park attacking right-wing ideologues, I'm always a bit amazed when people insist that Stone and Parker are right-wingers. More accurately, they don't like ideologues of any stripe.

21. There was an episode that made fun of the Florida recall fiasco.
Ike and another kid are running for class president (and Mr. Garrison is the teacher). The votes get continuously recounted, until the other kid's representatives point out that there was an absentee ballot, which didn't count, then they take the case all the way to the principal, and it's freaking hilarious!

23. Absent kids count!
Filmore: Count them again.

Filmore's Supporters: Yeh!

Mr. Garrison: NO, children! I've recounted 106 times now and I keep coming up with seven to six! Except in the one instance where it came out seven to five, and one where it came out twelve to fourteen. IT'S OVER! IKE IS CLASS PRESIDENT!

Kid #2: Wait, there's still that absent kid.

Fillmore: Yeah. If Carlos is absent, we have to wait for his vote.

Mr. Garrison: Oh, will you grow up?!

Filmore's Supporters: (clamoring) Absent kids count! Absent kids count!

Mr. Garrison: Jesus! Alright, we'll wait for tomorrow so the absent kid can cast his vote!
