If I could raise a child, and could adopt this girl, I would. I met her Saturday. She was in the cart seat, and her brother and sister were in the plastic car attached to the cart. The two in the car were boisterous and loud - they were there to buy eggs for dying.

I told them, "I used to dye eggs when I was a little girl," and the girl in the car said, "How old were you when you were a little girl?" :) I said, "Seven." She asked "How old are you now?" I said, with big eyes, "forty-four!" She said, "Wow! That's how old my mommy and daddy are!"

But the child in the cart seat stole my heart. She was quiet, and sweet. I asked her name - Faith. I don't remember a thing that we talked about. At one point, somehow our hands touched, and she said, "Your hands are warm." And I said "yours are cold!" and I took her hand between mine. That tiny hand fit entirely into my palms. I let her go and said, "there!" then she reached out and took my hands with her other one. It was cold too, you see. That's when I fell in love.

If only I could have a child. I don't really want one, never did. But god, that child stole my heart.

2. that's happened to me, too --
completely captivated by a child. I don't have any great desire to give birth to a child, either, but still think about adopting in the future. And I don't feel like there's anything missing in my life - but sometimes there's a kid who just steals your heart. I was listening to "What do you know?" (or whatever it's called) on NPR once and the host called out the name of a family, and you could hear this tiny, piping, incredibly sweet young girl's voice saying "Here we are!" (she was soooo excited) - but something about the quality of her voice just gripped my heart and squeezed it tight. I still think of that little voice. And one of my nieces is so freaking wonderful I'd have snatched her from my sister if I could've...

What a wonderful story, bertha. Faith sounds like she's a doll...
