The gluten scare has been an eye-opener for me.
I went to the health food store... Organic chicken and chicken soup ingredients. I even found gluten free brown rice crispies cereal for the kids and gluten free pretzels for their lunch snack.

Cooked all day long and chicken soup made the house smell so good and homey. It is delicious!

I took out some of the soup for our cat - loaded with chicken and rice AND he snubbed my masterpiece. Prefers hunger. Great. Good. Okay - I'm an adult. I can deal with this. Maybe he likes living on the edge eating carciogenic, life threatening junk. But hey, not in my house. Sucks to be him and having to eat healthy.

So... the twins and my DH come home and I'm in the process of setting the dining table AND the kids (twins - 6 years old) ripped open the gluten free crispies and started eating that in the kitchen while my back is turned.

AND my DH grabbed a steak from the fridge and started frying (ugh) it.

Okay, I'm an adult. Just wondering if perhaps I'd be happier as a divorced DOG owner who only wants visitation rights during one holiday... like St. Patrick's Day when I will be drinking anyway?

Anyone else going through lifestyle hell?

Glad I'm working tomorrow. Crispies for all!

1. Not eating can kill a cat.
You have to transition most of them to new food. And a typical human soup has waaaaaaaaay too much salt and starch for a cat, so unless you're going to make cat-specific food, you're better off with a high quality cat food (Natural Balance and Nature's Recipe are the two my cat is on, both are good stuff.)

2. I feed him Wysong...
My soup really was all natural - organic - no broths - no salt - just tons of chicken and sushi rice, carrots, celery... he's always had his dry food (and water) out.

I'm going to try some Nature's recipe. Maybe even feed it to my ungrateful family!

3. There's no wheat in it, at least!
;)

Wysong is good stuff, but I have no clue what the deal is in terms of the recall. I know NB and NR are clear, since I feed them and have kept an eye out.

7. I just switched my flutd cat to Wysong Uretic, now that I don't trust Hill's
prescription foods. My other two cats get Pet Promise. None of these have been recalled.

8. Hope that works out for you.
Does your cat like it so far?

11. Loves it!!! The other two are trying to grab some, too.
And since the Wysong website says it's fine as a maintenance diet, I may give in and switch all of 'em.

4. Regular rice krispies doesn't contain wheat gluten:
http://www2.kelloggs.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?brand=207&product=585&cat=cereal

RICE, SUGAR, SALT, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, MALT FLAVORING. VITAMINS AND IRON: IRON, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), NIACINAMIDE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMIN HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B1), VITAMIN A PALMITATE, FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN B12 AND VITAMIN D. TO MAINTAIN QUALITY, BHT HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE PACKAGING.

(I don't blame you if you want a healthier cereal overall -- and what the hell is BHT and why is it in the packaging? -- but switching because of the gluten scare is unnecessary.)

Regular Snyders of Hanover pretzels don't contain added wheat gluten either:
Unbleached wheat flour, water, salt, malt, dextrose, canola oil*, yeast, soda. *Adds a trivial amount of fat.
http://www.snydersofhanover.com/en/products.php?cat=1&id=5

Sure, there's some naturally occurring gluten in wheat, but that's not the problem -- it's the manufactured wheat gluten additive that's the problem.

9. I took back some unused canned Nutro
It wasn't on any lists, but I don't trust any of them. I replaced with Merricks organic. They process all of their foods themselves using human grade, organic food.
