Do you ever accept a MySpace friend request from someone you don't know?
I just joined the site this week and I get friend requests from total strangers (along with the ones touting spam). Some of them look interesting; I'm not even thinking in a dating sense, they just look like interesting people. But I don't know if I should accept any as friends. I can't help wondering if they're just looking to get laid. (I have received messages in that area, which I ignore. One guy sent a message saying he's looking for friends with benefits, am I interested?) Some weird shit on that site.

Would you, or do you, accept people as friends who you don't know?

1. I accept requests from people I don't know all the time.
:) As long as it's not spam and "get rich quick" shit. If they get obnoxious or I decide later to delete them, I do. I've done it to a few so far.

Funny, I'm not usually the one asking to be added as a friend.

2. I do not...
I look at their friends lists and see if we have anyone in common. Like, do I recognize any DUers on their lists? Do I know anyone in real life from their lists? Are they more than likely just going to spam up my bulletins? If the answers are no, no, yes, then they don't get added. I'm pretty scientific, huh? LOL

5. That's a good point, about spamming up the bulletins.
I hadn't thought of that. Is there a way to delete old bulletins? I've been on the site less than a week and I've already got quite a few bulletins there, but I haven't noticed any place to delete the old ones.

3. I Have Stopped Doing That Lately
because unless it is a band or a musician, they hide themselves as "friends" and are trying to get in to spam you.

I had one today that said they were using their "friend's" myspace account to send me a message and they were just too lazy to have one of their own. Would I please e-mail them at (gave some yahoo.com addy) if I was interested in meeting them...

I checked the myspace page of the person they allegedly had used to send the message and it was full of "friends" that were all like "start your own business" stuff.

I've gotten messages directly from people who were asking to be friends that were in fact just trying to get into my extended network to spam people.

myspace has a million traps of people trying to get in to spam you...

if I don't know them I will usually message them asking who they are... I've had a couple of people that were legitimate people who had come across my page and just were interested in talking to me and that has been cool too.

7. Sure
Sometimes I send I exchange a couple messages first. Meeting new people is part of what the site is for and I'm made some new friends through it.

9. I usually make sure I know who it is first.
Lots of unknown friend requests are just people trying to sell stuff.

I've met lots of great classic film fans through MySpace that I wouldn't have known otherwise.

11. MySpace fucks with my rods and cones...
I refuse to visit it. But, on occasion, when I have gone there I saw people with 3000+ friends. Bullshit, they just want as many friends on the list as they can get. Congrats, you just found someone stupid enough to click on any link they see. MySpace is a tardbarn.

28. um, I know it's below you and all
but actually I have met some cool people through it, and gotten in touch with a couple of people I have not seen in 20 years. I don't get on it a lot, but to say it's a "tardbarn" is pretty self-limiting and rude too. But oh well.

12. Nope. They all come from what appear to be barely legal adults...
If I wait long enough, myspace will say the request came from an account that was deleted.

Real people are usually easier to spot.

Having a firewall and antivirus solution makes me feel easier as well, but a 0 day exploit would go right through...

13. Nope
To confound it, a lotta DUers give little clue to their DU identity on their MySpace page, so some digging is required to find out who they are. If that still yields no clues, no add.

14. Rarely
I only accept requests from people that live around me and people I can positively identify from other places I've lived. So my friend list isn't that big (28)

18. It used to be and still is, but now more adults are joining in.
I only went on there because a friend I'd lost touch with has a page and you can't send someone a message unless you join up too.

17. I have......
But in general, I don't......

Sometimes, if I feel like making the effort, I'll ask if I know them from here.....

And if I do, then of course I add them......

If they don't respond...well, too bad!

20. i do on occasion...
...but only if they look like theirt lives are more interesting than mine.

I'm not saying that to sound conceited... i just don't have much in common with average, everyday people most of the time, and i don't want my 'friends list' to number in the thousands.

25. If they are an artist, I do if..
I think they have any kind of talent. Because the requests I get are often from lesser known ones, and they need attention. Others I usually deny, because they have adult stuff on their profiles that I'm not interested in, are fake virus profiles, or spammers.

27. Yes, but that's the nature of my page
I put one up a couple months ago as an extension of my blog. It's been quite a hit, with 405 'friends' as of this moment. I have never met a single 'friend' on my page.

Of course, I have turned down quite a few requests from spammers, bands, cranks, etc. That gets annoying. And I have dropped a few that have gone nuts in spamming my comments. Big no-no in my book.

For bands, I've been adding ones that actually have something to do with my profile. The randomly sent out requests are a bit obnoxious. I've requested that bands who wish to add me stand a better chance if they message me first. Then at least I know they're not just spamming.

And yes, I do have another personal profile there but I really don't make much use of it anymore. Myspace seems a bit silly to me for that. I just use it for tasteful promotion.

Here's the profile I've been working on mostly:

http://www.myspace.com/ltrspace

Anyone here who wants to add, just send a request.

if they're from my school; yeah, we have 50,000 people, but they probably know me if they're adding me. If they're not, I see if we have any friends in common.
