I rescued a trapped sparrow yesterday...
:) My dogs were barking furiously outside yesterday morning, and I went to see what the fuss was about. They don't bark at nothing, so it was obviously something that alarmed them. They were at the far corner of the house near the gutter downspout, and they were barking at something in the downspout. I walked down and heard something struggling inside, and I knew it had to be a bird or a squirrel or a chipmunk. I pulled off the angled part of the downspout, and it was clogged with leaves and debris. (My dear, dear husband TOLD me he'd cleaned the gutters while I was at work one day in December... yeah, right... :eyes:) I got a spade out of the garage nearby and started digging out the debris from the straight part of the downspout. My dogs were right behind me paying rapt attention. :P The animal was about four inches from where the clog started, and I wanted to be sure not to hurt it. I had to shake the downspout gently, and I know I rattled the poor thing. When the last part of the clog finally came out, a bewildered sparrow flew out and into a tree.

I praised my dogs for alerting me, and they were very happy with themselves. :) When I went back inside, I told my husband what had happened, and he said, "Oh, I must have missed that when I cleaned the gutters." :eyes: I knew he hadn't cleaned a thing, because I gave the gutters themselves a quick glance as I was going in. There is a tall chair on our deck, and I stood up on it briefly and could see muck in the gutters, same as in the fall. :( He was so busted....

2. Good things will happen to you because you did a good deed
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 08:21 AM by Maineiac

One fine day as I was walkin' in my yard,
the dogs came a runnin' and they were barking real hard.
A little sparrow was stuck in the spout.
I shook real hard and it popped out.
And I heard it say as it flew away:

"May the bird of paradise fly up your nose
May an elephant caress you with his toes
May your hubby be plagued with holes in all his hose
May the bird of paradise fly up your nose."

13. I never lie like that
it always bites me in the ass eventually. Better just to say: "No dear, I didn't clean the gutters. There was too much beer cluttering up the fridge and I thought I would get it out of the way first."
