I'm here to brag-- my son just received a Goldwater Scholarship!
Yes, yes, I know, it was named to honor a man I have little respect for, but still it's a very prestigious award and it will help us out financially.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

Here's the current press release:

March 2007
Scholar Press Release

GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Mrs. Peggy Goldwater Clay, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, announced today that the Trustees awarded 317 scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States.

The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,110 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. One hundred seventy-four of the Scholars are men, 143 are women, and virtually all intend to obtain a Ph.D. as their degree objective. Twenty-eight Scholars are mathematics majors, 223 are science and related majors, 54 are majoring in engineering, and 12 are computer science majors. Many of the Scholars have dual majors in a variety of mathematics, science, engineering, and computer disciplines.

The one and two year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Goldwater Scholars have very impressive academic qualifications that have garnered the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs. Recent Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 69 Rhodes Scholarships (6 of the 32 awarded in the United States in 2006), 86 Marshall Awards (6 of the 44 awarded in the United States in 2006), and numerous other distinguished fellowships.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established by Public Law 99-661 on November 14, 1986. The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

In its nineteen-year history, the Foundation has awarded 5,202 scholarships worth approximately fifty-one million dollars. The Trustees plan to award about three hundred scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year.

1. that's marvelous news!
I hope you have better luck getting your son to use his scholarship. My son threw his away.

(I'm sure you'll have better luck)

3. Oh my, Mille, how?
Mille, please don't tell me he threw a Goldwater Scholarship away? They're extremely difficult to get.

This is my son's third scholarship, but it is by far the best, most prestigious, has the highest cash value, etc. It's only awarded to third and fourth year college students.

Millie, even if your son did not pursue his intended career, an education is never wasted.

Thanks for your good wishes.

9. My son had a different scholarship
A John & Abigail Adams scholarship. 4 years tuition to any state college or university.

He started the semester strong, and then just stopped going. He failed every class, and because he didn't make grade, he lost the scholarship.

He is not currently registered in school.

It's a crime really. He's a VERY smart kid.

I'm not sure what he's going through. He may be depressed, but he won't go and get help and now that he's not in school, he has no insurance.

I just keep hoping that whatever lesson he needs to learn, it won't be too hard on him.

10. ooh! a 4 year scholarship!
A John & Abigail Adams scholarship and a 4 yr. ride! Wow! I am impressed too. I'm so sorry he was UNABLE to take advantage of it for whatever reason.

My brother did something like that, but he didn't have a scholarship. It turned out that a girl had broken up with him and he couldn't pull it together. After 20 something yrs. of various jobs and a broken marriage, he went back and got his degree. He seems happy now.

You're right, lessons are learned by every mistake we make. Your son will find his niche, I'm sure.

5. thank you
He's a physics major and we're so proud of him. A $15,000 burden for tuition, fees, books, room and board, etc. was just lifting from us.

I truly think we liberals are more intelligent in all fields than are the conservatives. I think there was an article published somewhere stating some research about that.

Anywho, thanks again.

I already have. :)

This scholarship is for his last 2 yrs. as an undergrad and it'll almost guarantee that he'll be able to find financing for his graduate work too.

We're so thrilled! I can't tell ya!
