need more help with Popup ads
I have a new computer and I am still trying to get all the kinks out of it. On my old computer I had the Google popup blocker and it worked splendidly. I installed it on the new machine and it was only moderately effective. Many popups slipped through. I then junked it and installed Popsubtract, which was not much of an improvement. I installed Ad-aware and yes I do have Norton anti-virus in my machine. I am puzzled as to why I would be having these problems now. Should I install more than 1 popup blocker?

2. Netscape.
The new Netscape browser has an excellent pop-up blocker built-in. Try it out.

It's just a name for an old mozilla version + spyware. Not bad - but why not try the real thing?

4. Computer protection has 5 layers
You need 5 layers of computer protection (in order of importance):
FIREWALL--blocks programs from going out or coming in without your permission.
SPYWARE BLOCKER--finds programs already installed on your computer that track your movements in order to try to sell products (pop ups)
TROJAN BLOCKER--finds programs alread installed on your computer that are used to malisciously steal information and track keystrokes
Pop Up Blocker--blocks pop ups while surfing the net.
ANTI-VIRUS--blocks and searches for programs on your computer that will harm your files and send harmful e-mails out to the world.

Once you understand the layers, get programs to cover those layers:

1) Zone Alarm--this is a free firewall that is very easy to use and it blocks people from loading programs onto your computer. It is like a car alarm. http://www.zonealarm.com
2) Spybot--this is a free spyware program tht looks for programs running in the background and sending popups. Make sure to update the software after you install it! http://www.safer-networking.org/
3) Trojan Scan--this is a free online scan. http://www.trojanscan.com/
4) Google--still free! http://www.google.com
5) Trend Micro--this is a free online anti virus scan. http://www.trend.com

Look at EZarmor in my reply #2 - it's good(Zonealarm pro + PCillin anti-virus) and it's free (at least for a year - the next Microsoft IE should be around before that tiome and address some issues ).

On Edit: and you should use Spybot in addition to ad-aware, as both products are missing a few spyware items.

7. Darn computers
You are covered for spyware, popups and antivirus. If you are at all parnoid (hey you are at this website, aren't ya) then I would go ahead and get spybot and run trend (since it is free) just to backup the other programs.

You should run trojan scan and download zonealarm, ESPECIALLY if you have a broadband/DSL connection.

I had my DSL for 3 days before downloading zonealarm and I had 2 trojans on my computer (I didn't download them either--someone hacked into my computer through my internet connection and placed them there).

Good Luck!

8. OK will do
My Norton has intercepted a couple of Trojans trying to gain entry (I could make a really sick joke with that statement, but anyway), but I will install the other programs, as I do have a Broadbanfd connection. My old machine had AVG, which worked very well. I will switch back to it when my free Norton trial ennd in March.

which from the moment I installed it I haven't seen a single pop-up.

I never thought something could work so well.
