1. Don't know why
there's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather...

Still a beautiful city, though. I'm jealous. :D

the whole day.

Don't be jealous, there are far more beautiful cities than Frankfurt.

3. Hi MissH
:hi:

Hey, I wanted to ask you. If I took the Eurotunnel to Calais, roughly how long would I need to drive from there to Frankfurt?

Still thinking about making a road trip across Europe in July.

Gotta dash for work soon, won't be able to reply then.

July is a great time to make the trip, the weather is usually good at this time, even in Germany

6. It's about 380 miles from Frankfurt to Calais.
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 03:53 AM by Kutjara
Just about all of that is Autobahn, so you can maintain a pretty high average speed. Back in the 70s, when my father worked in Frankfurt, it would take us 8 or 9 hours, but that was before they connected Calais up to the European motorway network. It's probably more like six now.

15. Hey, billy — I just realized somethin' that could save you a few quid
You could have your car ferried to Calais, then you could jump the Channel.

It is, in fact, easier to jump over sea than dry land, because when you're five miles out with nothing but sea beneath you, there's a very great impetus to stay in the air.

7. Glad to see you're enjoying your new camera MHC.
It certainly takes some great pics.

Which way is that first one looking. I think it's the north bank of the Main looking across toward Sachenhausen or the museums, but I could be wrong. It's been about ten years since I was last in Frankfurt.

Great food, great company and, of course, great beer. There's nothing like drinking real beer in a real bierkellar. Or at least I think so; my memories of doing so are somewhat hazy. ;)

23. When I worked in Frankfurt as a teenager...
...my boss would stop his truck at a trinkhalle first thing in the morning, buy a load of brotchen with raw beef and onions, a case of beer, and about four small bottles of Apfelkorn. The rest of the day was spent making deliveries, eating and drinking. Once the beer was finished, it was onto the apfelkorn. I used to dread it when he brought those small bottles out and insisted everyone drank. I could feel my teeth rotting a little bit more with every sip. <shudder>

one smells so good after eating those (esp. the raw onions).

What were you working at?? It is amazing how inconsiderable some people are. Drinking and driving, esp. with a young person in the truck.

Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 04:51 AM by Kutjara
I ended up loving that stuff. Once you've had three of those for breakfast, chased down by a beer, cereal and milk just seem too wimpy for words.

We all thought my boss was so cool because he could drink all day and never seemed to be drunk. He'd drive all over the city with a blood-alcohol level high enough to kill a moose, yet never lost control. Of course, I now realize he was a high-functioning alcoholic and it was only a matter of time until he killed himself or someone else but, then, he was Herr Cool.

I worked with a crew that delivered sports equipment to the various sportsfields and stadiums around the city. We also maintained football fields, baseball diamonds (the Americans still had their base back then), swimming pools etc. Mostly, we drank.

I was going to college in London at the time, but got this summer job to give me extra spending money. It was a great way to earn money for not doing very much, while being out in the lovely weather. We also got free tickets to see local sporting events, which was a nice bonus.

one year as a teenager I worked with the "Städtische Gartenamt" of a small town at the Bodensee (Lake Constance). I was on the fresh air all day also, unless I had to clean out the trash cans. It was fun on the one side, on the other side ... I was 15 or 16 and had to work with guys around 50. Ewwwww.....

37. LOL. It was similar for me.
Some of the guys had started the job when they were in school, as a way of making money, but never left. They just fell into the routine of easy work in a nice environment and never grew up. Half of the people I worked with were in their late 30s or 40s, unmarried, and had been doing the same job for twenty years. The funny thing is they were some of the happiest people I've ever known. They knew their job was secure, it provided their basic needs and a few luxuries, and caused no stress. I guess it wouldn't be suitable for everyone, but, for them, it was heaven.

I do have another lens for the camera, that is why I had to get a Canon. Not that it is a bad choice :D

But if you are not bound to a certain brand because you already have lenses of it, check them all out. Or what you could do is post a thread in the photography group, asking for advice.

I went cross country skiing yesterday and took the work digi with me. Unfortunately I forgot to bring home the cabling so I couldn't download. Will do that when I get to work. But I've discovered that I do not like the viewfinder on that camera. Very difficult to see the image that I want to photograph. Do you use the view finder on your camera or the viewing screen?

Oh and btw, lucky you - to get a visit from Billy! :woohoo:
