What do you think the odds are some of us on DU are phone tapped?
Just curious.I had crackling on my phone line yesterday. It got me to thinking I wonder how many lefties are being tapped.I do not think I am tapped but I think it is likely some of us are.
Your opinion?

1. High.
Although I don't think "crackling" on the phone is a key indicator that your line is bugged.

4. The last time I started thinking about this subject, what REALLY freaked me
out was what the government might have been doing WRT my bank account. Granted, there's almost no money in it, so they're probably not doing much, but still. I think the financial monitoring is creepier than the phone call monitoring.

16. the gov't has a stack of paperwork just on my finances
and i am not very wealthy, however, i have been required to help with some of the paperwork myself

sometimes you will know about the financial spying, sometimes you are not required to be informed, depends on the situation

7. The guvmint doesn't tap phones anymore
The government has special super secret technology that lets them do remote brain scans and they can tell what you're thinking, sometimes even before you think it

confirm it.

They've tapped into my brain and made me crave an Olive Garden Endless Soup and Salad Bowl lunch.

:tinfoilhat: I don't think I'm a big enough fish to have to worry but you really never know.

The financial bit? Creepier than just monitoring your bank account. DHS monitors your credit card activity too. http://www.boingboing.net/2006/03/07/investigated_by_home.html This is just one of many similar stories about people being investigated for terrorist links after making unusually high payments on their credit cards.

15. i doubt i'm phone tapped any more but it has happened to lots of us i'm sure
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 10:48 AM by pitohui
crackling on the lines hasn't been proof of anything except bad equipment (storms) since probably the 1980s

i've been investigated before and there was a lot more to it than just the phone but i'm too tired to type about it again -- my case goes back many years

these guys are not as subtle as you think, they will try to entrap you, they don't just sit on their ass listening to phone calls

don't worry about crackle on the lines, worry about if a person or persons tries to entice you into something you would not normally do -- they like to neutralize people by getting them convicted of drug or violent crimes -- never participate in an action with somebody you have not known for seven years, as paul watson used to say (maybe he still says that)

supposedly the fbi never "quite" closes your files, a friend of mine from aim in the 70s, ran into an fbi agent he knew in the middle 90s and learned his file was still open although they had been considering closing it -- they thought the guy might be dead but having confirmed he was alive the agent said the file would stay open

having a file open and having your phone tapped or an active investigation or attempt at entrapment is two very different things though

just keep it legal and be very suspicious of someone who brings you a "good" argument for moving drugs or money or being involved in an action that could potentially harm someone physically

i believe many posts or communications received from people advocating "revolution" are not from true progressives, who tend to be against violence, but are from gov't agents -- call me paranoid but i feel i have good reason to think so

I get phone calls with nothing but clicks, and "Unknown caller" or "Blocked call". No person on the other end. i assume they are just automated calls from bill collectors.

There are, after all, over 100,000 of us (minus those TS'd), and some of us are fairly well-known lefty agitators. So yeah, some of us are tapped.

That doesn't mean you are, though, necessarily. :tinfoilhat:

25. While I was practicing Islam my mother actually called the FBI
to "monitor" me and the people that I was associating with. They told her that they would look into. I don't think I'll ever get over the anger and resentment that she did that though she told me it was because she was concerned about the people that I was talking to and that I had started to espouse "anti-American" sentiments during that time. What she doesn't realize was that I was "anti-Bush" since he stole the 2000 elections.
She tells me that they probably don't montitor me anymore, but I still got a feeling that I have a file somewheres and I am on some clandestine list.

So yeah, I am still angry at her about it but I don't let her know.

31. I was starting to practice Islam in 2002
a few months after the 9/11 thing. I guess she was so wrapped up in the news about how horrible Muslims were etc. That she felt that I was getting into danger. She tells me today that she was concerned because it wasn't a good time to be practicing that religion but when I was living with her and her mother she gave me so much grief. She told me I was going to hell and that she was going to rip up my Qur'an and other Islamic literature that I got. It really created a big rift.

I moved back with my dad, she tells me it was because of my grandma not wanting me there, I don't know about that.

Then when I started wearing the full niqaab and stuff she would tell me she didn't want me to come to her house "dressed like that" or to her dialysis center in "those clothes" as it would make the people there "uncomfortable" I had talked to someone there and they said they could "give a shit" what I wore or what I practiced and this was someone who was a hardcore fundy and Bush supporter.

My mom would tell me that I was "stressing" her out and that I was going to give her a heart attack and kill her because she was so worried that I would get beaten and/or shot. I have been a Muslim for a year or so at this time and the most I got from anti-Muslimism is three times when people would tell me to go home and they were the white, Repuke types. Other than that everyone was genteel with me. Men would open doors for me and people would come up and ask me about Islam. The bus drivers on the busses that I took conferred with me and one was even Muslim though she didn't wear a hijab. She even told me that she was sad that she was seeing alot of hate on the news, etc. A teacher at the library asked me about my religion as she tries to teach multicultural stuff in her class and I referred her to the mosque here in GR as well as some books.

I did have one unstartling event but it was really nothing out of context. I was at the Rapid's transit center in downtown and was waiting for the bus for Michigan Ave to pull up. While I was waiting there was this girl about my age at the time that was asking questions about Islam. I could tell she was the fundy type, long hair and a long dress. She asked me questions about Allah and such. When we boarded she then asked me the most strange and inane question anyone could ask: "Did you ever kill anyone?" :wtf: I just laughed and said no.

My mom, I feel harbors a deep and subconscious prejudice against Muslims though she won't say so.

When talking on the phone with my friends I sometimes have a bit of a laught at the intelligence agencies' expence.

Interperse your conversation with loaded phrases.

e.g. "Blah blah, secret plan, blah terror cell blah" and so on.

It's easy and fun. If Secret Squirrel is listening in he'll be getting a lot of false positives.

seriously, the groups that the Government have been actively surveilling tend to be Quakers and Critical Mass cyclists. So unless you are some sort of Peacenik activist I wouldn't worry.
