Anyone here been to the Czech Republic?
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 06:38 PM by ikhor
just curious if anyone here has been there or lived there? Gimme the straight dope on it.

edit: i hear that the CR is 58% atheist/agnostic, #1 in the world in beer consumption, and pot is not just decriminalized but actually legal to grow and smoke, which 25% of the populace does regularly......sounds like my kinda place!!!

2. Yes. Once.
A business trip two years ago to Prague and Bratislava. Absolutely the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. Prague is known as the Paris of eastern Europe. The people are great, the food is delicious, and it's not very expensive. I love historic cities and am some what of an architecture buff. Prague did not disappoint. It sustained minimal damage from WW2 so most everything is still intact. The most romantic city I have ever visited.

Q

PS: As an aside, if you can't get laid in Prague, you're just not tryin'!

I'm a Canadian diplomat so I have special priveleges and status when I visit foreign countries. You should check with the US state dept. and find out those deatails.

3. Yes, 20 years ago, though
It was still Czechoslovakia then. But I did love it. Spent about a week and a half in and around Prague. I always wanted to go back. :)

4. Mr. BAL makes frequent business trips there. Last year, Mr. B@ and I
accompnied him.

It is not to be missed if you have the opportunity. Stunningly beautiful. I found the people not that warm (we are a mixed race couple and we got LOTS of stares, he says he gets many stares on his own as well).

The beer is out of this world good and dirt cheap. Definitely try some authentic Czexh food although you can find every cuisine there.

The nightlife is legendary, unfortunately, because of Mr. B2, Mr. B and I were unable to enjoy it although he has been and says it's incredible.

Enjoy, and do post pictures!

7. Haven't been there
but I dated a Czech for several years. Prague is supposedly beautiful. One of the only cities in Europe not damaged by the war, so great old architecture. Interesting people.

11. I was there for 5 weeks this summer
The Czech Republic was very nice, and I thought the people were good as well. I'd have no qualms spending more time there. However, I have to warn you that a lot of the less economically successful regions of the country (Moravia) still bear a big imprint from communist days. The residence I stayed in was built during the 60s and was definately not one of the nicer places I've lived. However, the countryside was beautiful and the people seemed pretty happy to have tourists like me visit their country.

One thing I will say, however, is that Prague is highly overrated. While it has some medieval areas, it is kind of lacking in monumental architecture. In the long run, Prague has always been second place to the nearby cities of Munich and Vienna (Vienna was stupendous). I'd say that Prague is nowhere near Paris in charm, and of the cities I visited on this trip, it wasn't as nice or as interesting as Krakow, Vienna or Budapest. I seem to be alone in my sentiments, however.

21. Budapest is just beautiful.
You can walk for miles and miles and you just keep seeing beautiful, cool and groovy stuff. English speakers are relatively rare, they learned Russian as a second language. Beautiful girls, of course. Food is a sort of hit and miss situation.

13. My Grandparents immigrated from Czechoslovakia in the 1890's
My sister went back a decade ago chasing our past. She got to the 17th century before the ancestry trail went blank in Russia around the time of the gypsy migrations.

15. Take my advice...
Not to rip on Prague (although I've already done that in this thread), you should consider moving Budapest up your list too. It's like Prague x 10.

It's possible to get that picture all by yourself, by which I mean to say it's not taken from a helicopter or anything but from the bluffs on the Buda side of the city (which are a popular and easily accessible attraction). Budapest was just great and I wish I could have spent more time there.

19. I've been to both Prague and Budapest since late 2005,
and I liked them equally regarding tourism. As far as nightlife is concerned, Prague is much better than Budapest.

The photo from reply #15 is awesome. I went inside there for a tour, and about 2 months later shrub visited Budapest...and I recalled being in the exact same rooms!

Close to where that photo was taken is a castle, and I won a free tour of the labyrinth underneath. The regular charge is 7 euros (about 9 dollars). Other than the entrance/front desk there is no lighting, so they give you an oil filled lantern! Some parts of it are so maze like they put up signs saying to hold onto a rope attached to the wall(the rope is about waist high). Lots of prehistoric drawings on the walls.

Prague has a sexual torture museum!

Prague's main church is the beginning point for a lot of walking tours(in English). The clock tower there has a skeleton on it!

Eating in either city can get very expensive if you aren't careful. The high tourism areas have several meal/show spectacles which can easily cost 70 dollars a person. If American style food is what you want(not McDonald's which are everywhere), there's a TGI Friday's in both cities. The one in Prague is a 5 minute walk from the clock tower, and Budapest has 2 of them.

In Budapest you can visit the building where the Russians had their headquarters during their occupation(1968-1994). Within walking distance is a TGI Friday's.

Budapest has several awesome spas/massage places. The inside is huge and fancy; made me feel like I was in a 5 star hotel. Massages are by appointment only due to the huge number of people who visit everyday. The massage is definitely not low brow; no sexual activity of any kind takes place. Despite that, I was constantly nervous that part of my anatomy would...ahem...rise to the occasion! Fortunately that never happened.

Please visit both cities if possible. Lots of good times in both cities. If you want more details send me a private message.
