O Brother, Where Art Thou? Is it a good movie ?
I never saw it but the critics say that it's

a blast!

Have you seen it ?

If so can you recommend it ?

I love the Coen brothers movies.

Fargo was great!!!

Should I trust the critics ?

Please tell me your opinion !

If it is the one I am thinking of - it is a great flick - but I would put the "Brother" movie a slight notch above.

yet both are on our radar screens enough to even notch them compared to each other. Perhaps that helps explain why we keep finding ourselves responding to the same threads on different forums - ala we may not always agree per degree of things - but we both find many things in a similar light. :hi:

42. I love Hudsucker, but I'd put Brother a couple of kicks above it.
Preference, I guess. I thought the dialogue in Brother was slightly better--more quirky, less stock--and the characters a bit more original. Then again, Hudsucker wasn't supposed to be as original, it was supposed to have elements of spoof of Frank Capra style films.

Both amongst the smartest comedies ever made. Great casts, excellent performances, unexpected twists-- how many people can work a deus ex machina into a modern film and make it work? Them and maybe Baz Lurhmann.

46. for me it's not just preferences, sure...hill billy mountain music is a plus...
but they tried to get Clooney to carry three notes in a row while acting like a palmade hick and he just couldn't do it enter the real stuff, plus who will argue with the sweetest little Allison Krauss...no body is my guess

though as an allegorical extrapolation of a classical theme i have seen better, still: cinematography good, players good, good music, predictably speedy convoluted screen chatter, etc...

but it's a Coen Brothers Film, so some things are both known & expected going in

A tale of the Odyssey wrapped in Depression era clothing.
I particularly liked "hades" the dude with the nooses and dogs.
Highly recommended.

the first time I sat down to watch it I didn't get into it. The second time it sucked me in - and I am glad I gave it a second chance bc it is one of the best movies I have ever seen.

The soundtrack is incredible as well.

29. This movie kicks ass.
The Coen brothers said they based it on "The Oddysey," and then claim to have never read it.
I love John Goodman as Cyclops.
The opening scene will kill ya, and you won't be able to tear yourself away from it. Just stock a cooler next to your chair and watch it.

41. The first half of it is great. But it falls apart in the second half.
As soon as John Goodman appears, you can turn it off, because nothing good or funny happens after that. A Ku Klux Klan rally, a romantic subplot, a storm/flood, nothing really funny or entertaining happens. Just watch the first half and stop as soon as you see John Goodman.

48. Yes, it is a great Movie......
One of My Kids' (carefully edited for them), mine and My 99 year old Grandmother's favorites.....Many Great Lines:

Delmar O'Donnell: Oh, George... not the livestock.

Ulysses Everett McGill: You two are just dumber than a bag of hammers.

Pete: You miserable little snake! You stole from my kin!
Ulysses Everett McGill: Who was fixin' to betray us.
Pete: You didn't know that at the time.
Ulysses Everett McGill: So I borrowed it until I did know.
Pete: That don't make no sense!
Ulysses Everett McGill: Pete, it's a fool that looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart.

Delmar O'Donnell: You work for the railroad, Grampa?
Blind Seer: I work for no man.
Delmar O'Donnell: Got a name, do you?
Blind Seer: I have no name.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well, that right there may be the reason you've had difficulty findin' gainful employment. You see, in the mart of competitive commerce..

Pappy O'Daniel: Shake a leg Junior! Thank God your mammy died givin' birth. If she'd have seen you, she'd have died o' shame.

Ulysses Everett McGill: What'd the devil give you for your soul, Tommy?
Tommy Johnson: Well, he taught me to play this here guitar real good.
Delmar O'Donnell: Oh son, for that you sold your everlasting soul?
Tommy Johnson: Well, I wasn't usin' it.

I hadn't heard what their source material was when I saw it in the theater, so I gasped like the geeky little English major I am (was) when the credit "Based upon Homer's Odyssey" popped up.

That they were able to get in a reference to the golden cattle of Helios is just one of the brazillion great things about this movie.
