It's official...we're moving.

Quick apology for the relative silence from me lately, but most of my non-work time has been tied up with loading things into boxes and hauling the entire contents of our basement to a rented dumpster. Next week, however, it finally pays off.

We got the notice today. Construction on our new house is complete, and settlement has been set for Tuesday morning at 9 AM.

We're in the middle of packing now, and hope to be settled into the new house completely by February 10th.

Once that's done, we just have to give a heads-up to the construction crews, and have a barbecue as we watch them tear down the old house for the road that's going right through it.

After eight years in a house built in 1930, with no insulation and next to no electrical outlets (one per room, except for the living room which has three), it's going to be nice to be in a new, state-of-the-art, energy efficient home.

Hopefully, by the middle of next month, things will have calmed down enough for me to be participating more often. Until then, I've got the last of the packing (about 45% of the house is left to do), utilities to transfer, and change of address notices to go out.

One quick observation: you never know how much stuff you accumulate in your life until you have to move it.

7. But once it's done, it's worth it.

My only concern is our three cats. They've been with us less than a year (we literally rescued them from a crack house) and are just now starting to accept our house as their home. They're being moved last, and we'll be with them constantly in the new house for the first couple of days, so hopefully they won't be too neurotic.

11. Last time we moved, 8 years ago, our kitty disappeared just after we moved in.

We looked for 3 days and were sure he was lost or worse...then on the 4th day he came strolling up to the porch! Since then he's rarely away for more than a few hours! :D

16. I've had similar experiences.

When I moved in 1992, T.C. (my old cat, who passed away last spring) hid behind the toilet for the better part of the week. Similarly, after we brought her over, Mickey hid in the corner of the fireplace for a few days.

Cats do not like change.

17. Does your new place have a fenced in yard?

If so, there's a terrific system called Cat-Fence-In. You install it (easy) on top of your existing fence - kitties can't get out, other kitties can't get in without extreme ingenuity! We've had ours now for 5 years, and have had only one "escape" - and that was because I left a ladder in the wrong place. Each new rescue had to try it out at least once, then settled contentedly in. They're much less tempted to try to get out the front or side doors, as well.

I already packed our DVD of It's a Wonderful Life and neither Bryan nor I could remember the tradition without watching the movie. :)

We're also obeying the tradition that to bring good luck to the new house, the pets have to move in before the humans. Ricky, Mickey, and Mongo will be going into the new house a few minutes before we go in for good.

So glad you are happy with your new digs vs the old. Sounds like something you will enjoy. My house is so full of 'stuff' it is apalling! (not new stuff, mostly 'found' and OLD fer sure, and 'lucky finds')

Moving is no fun. Every time I've moved, I've lost one box of possessions. I don't know how...but it's happened every time. If someone finds the universe where the pen caps and socks go, they'll probably find my boxes there too!

Make sure you take some pictures of the old house before it's torn down. If you don't, you know you'll wish you did!

10. Good luck in your new home!

We moved in '04 from a 4-bedroom house in Oklahoma to a 2-bedroom duplex in California. We were driving our own moving truck to save money. A three day trip with a truck loaded up to the roof, a Toyota Corolla full of junk that wouldn't fit into the truck, and our dog and cat not knowing what the hell is going on.

We had a huge garage sale to get rid off about half of our stuff. Whatever nobody wanted to buy we put on our front lawn with a big sign "free stuff - feel free to take" and it was gone in less than an hour. It was hard to let go of some of the stuff, but now I am glad we did.

12. Good for you. You're new house will amaze you after living in

a house built in the '30's. Next time I move, whatever that stuff is that's in the garage is staying. It's been there 8 yrs so I obviously don't need it - house will be sold "as is" and that means the garage.

13. Good luck on the move

Please be careful on packing items-better to have many relatively light boxes than two or three extremely heavy ones. Make sure when you are done that you treat yourself to a massage/or spinal adjustment. I want one of my favorite cartoonists chipper and able to let me know if Her Majesty ever likes ANYONE on "Victoria Idol". :)

15. We shifted from large boxes to smaller ones this week.

We were leaving the large ones anywhere from 1/3 to half empty to keep them a manageable weight.

The real tricky part is that Bryan has a collection of nearly 37,000 comic books which he just recently finished sorting and boxing for the move. Those long boxes get VERY heavy, and we're going to have to move them from the second floor of the old house down to the basement of the new house. One box at a time, 75 trips up and down. Then unloading the truck the same way.

I've warned him that the comics go first. That will also give us room for more packing boxes once they're gone.
