Do you plan on going to the Iowa Caucus? Let’s have a DU Meet-Up!!

I queried this issue a couple weeks ago and got a pretty good response behind the scenes in PM’s. So, I’m raising the issue again now that the holidays are over. The question was basically – is there any interest in a DU meetup in Des Moines the Saturday or Sunday night before the Iowa caucuses. (The caucus is on Monday the 19th of January)

I know for a fact there are many DUers in Iowa for the week of the Iowa caucus/primaries, to promote their particular candidates and/or to otherwise participate in this electoral process. For the record, I am not advocating or promoting any one particular candidate. My interest in this get-together is partially to get acquainted with the electoral process, but for the purposes of this post it is primarily to organize a DU get-together on the Saturday or Sunday night before the caucus.

The responses I got a couple weeks ago indicated interest for a get-together on the weekend from Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Alabama and even California! And Iowa, of course.

I live about 3 hours away from Des Moines and would plan on spending the day and over night in Des Moines for this occasion. I don’t have a location yet for this get together, but I am hoping a DUer from Des Moines I have been in contact with by PM can suggest a meeting place, as I am not familiar with Des Moines. I will get back to you on that.

So, are you interested in a DU type get-together on the Saturday or Sunday night before the caucus? If so please note your interest in this thread or PM me. There were at about a dozen people that indicated some interest when I brought this up a couple weeks ago. I will contact all of those that indicated an interest a couple weeks ago with a copy of this thread.

Also, please indicate if Saturday or Sunday would work best for you, or if you have no preference and could make either one. I don’t have a preference, but thought Sunday night might work best for people since it is the night immediately preceding the caucus.

If our schedules match and you are not looking to stay in Des Moines for the week, maybe we could even car pool for this trip. :D

Keep an eye on this thread and I'll get back to you. We are looking at the weekend of Saturday the 17th or Sunday the 18th. The Iowa caucus is Monday the 19th.

6. Almost anytime is fine for me...

but I'll hold off for just a little bit on being decisive. Although I'm currently unemployed, I do have a PT job with my old boss and will check the schedule!

from what I understand.

When you get a schedule please let me know because it's my understanding that you can be in Des Moines for that weekend. I saw a schedule somewhere and I don't think there were activities or events planned for the weekend. Do let me know when you get a schedule though.

and would like to. places to meet in Des Moines, well that depends on where in DM you want to be. I'm orignally a southsider so I know that best.

Plenty of hotels in downtown DM with either good bar/lounges or easy access to the latter. I can get some phone numbers here if anyone needs one

Southside of Des Moines there are a couple of hotels about five miles or so away from the downtown area but are very easy to get to. I'll try and post some numbers here by tomorrow so we can get something going at least.

nice to see another Iowan in here. Even though you live in the wrong part of our great state(just kidding). I live in Davenport and know a little about Des Moines; a couple of cool bars anyway. Cannot promise that I'll be there,as my car is in bad shape right now, but keep in touch if possible. Plan on caucusing here on 1/19 though. Good luck with your venture and, like I said, keep in touch if possible.
