We finally watched An Inconvenient Truth
Damn.

:scared:

I'm one of those people Gore talked about who goes straight to "Oh my god this is too damn big and impossible." Scary and overwhelming... kinda pushes the whole "what's the point of anything, really?" that goes on in my head sometimes. Depressing, and scary, and .... god, the whole world is going to go upside-down, and soon.

If you watched it, and feel like this, what have you done to cope? What have you changed in your day-to-day life and how you interact with the world??

1. Now watch Animal House
You're feeling all glum like the Deltas before the finale. Well, nothing is over until we decide it is.

Don't pout, just do what you can to improve the situation. Is it really necesary to use your car as often as you do? Probably not.

Yes, things are a mess but they can improve. It just takes gumption and spirit

2. Create a local network
It is too big to go it alone. I am trying to create a network of local people to discuss change and do something. I liked Al the performer more than Al the candidate.

3. I agree about Al
If he runs again, he needs to ignore any advice to play down his sense of humor and his warmth, and we need to not let the MSM get away with making him all "cardboard" again!

4. Right On!
He'd be a great candidate. Imagine a candi ate that answered questions and had real ideas.

5. So true, LynzM
it is overwhelming.

When anything seems too big for me, too much out of my hands, I remember this affirmation:

I am only one
But still I am one.
I cannot do everything,
But still I can do something.
And because I cannot do everything
I will not refuse to do the something I can do.

Edward Everett Hale

If everyone believed that...heck, even if only 50% could...or 20%...think of the difference it could still make.

Personally, I go by the three r's...in order - reduce, reuse and recycle. And I don't beat myself up over things like needing a car (some people can do without one, I'm not one of them), I just choose one wisely. I don't shop for the sake of shopping, I reuse things if I can, recycle (my city has excellent recycling facilities) and compost...I'm always learning new ways of doing things, and incorporating them into my life.

12. It was printed
on a UU order of service one Sunday...I loved it so, and copied it. Not surprisingly, Hale himself was UU.

6. I saw it for the first time in mid-November. Considering....
my home is underwater in the next several decades according to the revised map of Florida I'm not sure how to react.

Depressing and scary indeed. This is going to take governmental level action.

7. Felt the same way.
The main fault of this otherwise-fantastic movie, IMO, is that it didn't give many concrete action points as to what we could do as individuals to combat the problem. There was a brief list at the end, but it was just text during the credits, which most people turn off. There's a misconception by the makers of this kind of film (I also include Nova and National Geographic specials in this category) that presenting a clear picture of how dire the situation is, will spur people to action. In fact, I've found the opposite is true - it makes people feel overwhelmed and hopeless. But give ideas for even small things that can be done, and people start to feel like they can have a hand in the solution. If everyone did just small things, it would have a huge impact.

I should note that it's also not just a matter of throwing money at the problem, i.e. asking for donations. While there are a lot of great organizations that are working to protect the environment, save endangered species, and working on renewable resources, and they do need money to operate, I think it's more personally empowering to ask people to do things with their own hands, in their own lives, where they can see and experience the results first-hand.

I wish I could find this site or list again, but somewhere there's a site that shows exactly how much energy is saved by recycling just one aluminum can, one glass bottle, changing one incandescent lightbulb to a flourescent, etc. It shows that even what seems like a drop in the bucket is not insignificant.

But those suggestions need to be presented to people, as clearly as the problem is presented. Most people won't go out and dig up that info on their own in a burst of determination - even if they're concerned, even if they're shocked. Even if you've been aware and upset about this problem for years, as is true of myself, there's a paralysis that sets in. Having a concrete set of action steps put before you, is a much more powerful motivator than just being shown the bad news.

I'd like to see Gore make a sequel to this movie with an action-oriented focus. Some years ago there were some great books along the lines of "50 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth" :

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/104-5512430-4778318?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=50+Things+You+Can+Do+To+Save+the+Earth&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

...and they had all kinds of great ideas and suggestions. Pick even just a few of them and do them consistently, and you've made a positive difference. But a movie format, in living color, with visual impact and sound and background music, is far more compelling in mass consciousness.

14. Isn't It!
I saw Boxer on the news and she was talking about green issues and they were saying that she will be heading some committee that will be a big part in regulating industry to reduce greenhouse gases.

15. I really think it is the most important issue for 08.
You could almost argue that we couldn't have a war without saving the planet first. If we were that sick. But you get my meaning. Gore really laid it out in that documentary. Did you see it Sat night at a house party, or did you buy it?

9. Yeah, I know what you mean. I went out and had a fuckin' beer.
or was it SEVERAL beers? LOL. I forget.

Pretty sobering, eh?

We do what we can and hope for the best. Otherwise, we go down the rabbit hole of FEAR and WORRY and that ain't fun.
