Dumb computer question: I'm getting a laptop for xmas...
And it will have a wireless card with it. Is there a way to add it to our Roadrunner internet set-up? We have a desktop with highspeed internet access. Do we have to get a separate internet account for the laptop?

Color me confused...

2. you do not need a separate account-- you will need a router...

...for your home network. You set it up like this: cable -> cable modem -> router -> your computers. You'll likely want a router with both wireless and ethernet output.

I'll only be able to use the internet on it at home? Thanks for the answer btw. :hi:

5. that's right....
To use your laptop on the internet other places you'll need to be in places that provide public access Wifi. Or if your workplace has a wireless network, you might need a password to log on to it if it is security enabled. But yes, your wireless router will only work over a limited radius, typically your home and maybe out as far as your immediate neighbors.

6. That's what I have - laptop, wireless card, cable modem, and router.
I can take the laptop anywhere in our house and yard.

When I travel, I can hook up to hotel wireless, free access wireless in certain places, or buy an access card at places like coffee shops that provide access.

7. you can buy a router at any computer/office store for, like, $99
that's what they were a couple of years ago, when I got mine. Hopefully, they are cheaper now. I also have a printer router (which cost another $99) so that I can send things to my printer from my laptop.
