From the previews I've seen it looks like a rip of LOTR, at least the special effects look that way.

4. The book was written by a teenager, yes.
I've never read it myself; every review I've seen says it's just a pack of cliches.

That should have been made into a movie (at least the first few books) many years ago.....

The sequel was even worse, I don't think I even finished it. That said, I'll probably end up watching it when it comes on DVD.
