Has anyone ever used TracFone?
I am in the process of deciding of whether to stay with Cingular or switch to another one, using pre-paid plan.

When Cingular first bought ATT it was OK but now they are cutting their service for pre-paid and I am not going to sign on any plan that I don't need.

While at Office Depot I picked a card about TracFone and on the web they seem to have extensive coverage but, frankly, I have never heard of them.

1. Get far away from Cingular. And look into Virgin Mobile.
My son has Cingular, and I think they are crooks.

I have prepaid Virgin Mobile, and I think they are fabulous. I highly recommend.

2. Virgin Mobile is Sprint in disguise
Virgin Mobile uses all of the Sprint towers. As long as you have enough Sprint towers where you travel and use your phone, it will work great for you. If you travel outside the main corridors, you might have some issues getting a signal.

Glad it works for you though. Don't you think that $2.50 a day for the first ten minutes a bit expensive?

5. Yes, I looked for retail stores from Virgin website
and among Radio Shack and Target and Walmart they also include Sprint.

But I really do not want a "per day" rate. With Cingular and, I think, T-Mobile and TracFone - if I read them right, you but time and you use it as you need. I have been paying $100 for a year which was more than enough and as long as I buy more time before the expiration date, I can roll the amount left for the next period.

I really do not use cell phone much. Only when I am away from a land phone or when traveling and do not want to use the hotel phones.

34. It's not all that great of a disguise, either
Since it says right on the back of the box, "coverage provided by Sprint."

I think it's a good synergy. Virgin Mobile is supposed to be all hip and fun and shit like that. They got Virgin to handle the hip, fun part and Sprint handles the nuts and bolts part of the business.

When I had a "plan" phone it was from Sprint and it worked okay. Now I have a Virgin phone, which I bought largely because it was on Sprint's backbone, and I'm happy with it.

16. As with all Sprint products
Virgin mobile owns no towers. They use Sprint towers exclusively. Sprint is really an urban carrier with few towers in rural, off the beaten path areas, at all. Match a Virgin mobile map with a Sprint map ... they are exactly the same coverage areas.

18. I pay just $5 a month....and I get all the minutes I need.
I used to pay $42.00 a month, paying for time I never used. I switched to Virgin and I've never, ever not been able to get a signal. I live in a moderate sized city and stick to interstates when I travel.

I got a deal where I just pay $15 every 3 months. My time rolls over and accrues.

For me, this deal has been incredible. I have saved a ton of money and I've been able to make all the calls I need to make. I can understand that it might not work for everyone.

Having said that, CINGULAR is still crap.

I have been paying $100 for a year, and rolling over the minutes and have plenty to spare. I like your plan.

What type of phone do you use? Does it have a speaker? Does it have a car kit with a speaker?

This point is very important - for the rare occasions when I do use the cell phone while driving.

31. Have had Virgin mobile for years. I pay about $9 per month.......
on average. Have very little problem with the coverage. I'm in North Carolina and the coverage along the interstates, down to Florida is excellent. Up in the NC mountains I've had trouble but all in all I love it. For the low minute user it's great.

Check their coverage map and see if it's good in your area.

BTW, my father-in-law is a low minute user and has a prepaid ATT, I think. Same good $$$ deal but may offer better coverage in your area.

and found it to be a total piece of crap. That's just my opinion though. It may be ok to just use in town, but your network area is basically whatever county you register it in. If you cross county lines, you are out of the area and your minutes are used up double time.

4. Tracfone does not own any towers
of their own, so they depend on piggybacking on the towers owned by other providers. It's been a while since I worked in the industry, but I believe Tracfone is all analog as opposed to digital or 3G technology. Before you buy into that technology, check out the type of signal they use and how much longer that will be supported in your area. Most carriers are migrating to 3G technology and will at some point stop supporting analog signals completely.

Is Cingular doing away with the go phone pre-pay options? I hadn't heard that news if they are.

7. No, they do not. They change the plan
so first I have to purchase a new phone. Then the area covered is really shrinking IF I stay with the pre-pay. Also the phones that they offer are limited. Currently the car kit for my old Nokia has a speaker and a microphone. I would like to be able to use the new phone hands free for the rare occasions that I do use the cell phone while driving.

But I can get an extensive coverage and a speaker phone if I sign for a plan but even at $29.99 a month is more than I need and a lot more expensive than the $100/yr that I pay now.

Thank you for the info about Tracfone. They offer a Motorola C139 but I don't know whether this is an analog or a digital.

I certainly will consider these points.

8. Motorola C139 is a GSM unit
http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=857

That's 3G technology and is more advanced than I remember Tracfone being. That's good if you are considering it because that means that they are now piggybacking on a digital signal tower.

After reading about the phone at the link above, check out that site. You will find lots of good info about the carriers as well as consumer issues there.

Good luck, and let me know what you go with. :)

I searched for carrier and for speaker phone.

Now I will have to contact them TracFone or T-Mobile and find out whether they will let me use a speaker phone as a pre-pay. Or, at least, have a car kit with speaker that some Nokia have.

17. If you have a speaker unit installed in your car
hard wired, you might want to contact that manufacturer of that speaker unit and find out what is compatible with it that is on the market now. You might need some retro-fitted something or other to adapt it, or you might be told that no new units will work with that at all.

You might want to look into a unit that is bluetooth capable. With the bluetooth unit, it is a wireless ear piece. Not quite what you have now, but better than one that must be tethered to the phone itself to use it.

43. No, not hard wired. A simple car kit that plugs into the cigarette
lighter and includes a microphone and a speaker and... I got spoiled by that.

I just looked at several Nokia phones and some do have car kits with speakers so it will be a matter of matching a carrier with a phone and a car kit. One problem with the pre-paid programs with all of them, it seems, is that they "assign" the simplest, cheapest phones, or even offer them for free. So the question will be if I can get a better phone if I will be willing to pay for it.

45. Well ...
When AT&T was still around (before they were Cingular) they used to allow any phone in their line to be purchased and used as a pre-paid phone, even though they had a kit with a phone just for that purpose. You might want to pose that question to the carriers you are considering and see if any still allow that option at all.

35. I have Tracfone live in rural NH
and have a Nokia 2285 phone that gives me the choice between digital or analog- or both-

It's coverage (in our area) is superior to any other carrier because it uses any available tower-

My son has a Nokia 2126 Tracfone- it was $19.95, with 40 starter minutes- has a speaker-phone, text messaging, flashlight ( ok, laugh,-I did- but it's come in really handy many times) has a full color display that can hold photos, graphics, has a 30 sec.voice recorder- memo, calculator, alarm clock, day planner, games- sounds like a toy, but my son is a 23yr old mechanic/truck driver/ outdoorsman- and he's not killed it yet-!

He gets the double/minute plan which gives him twice the face value on the card if he needs to buy more service- It's his only phone, and he uses it alot- He spends much less than he would on any 'plan' available in this area- and has NO bills come in the mail-

The card that I have is a year of service with roll-over minutes. Tracfone usually offers 'special deals' which give you that 'year of service' with 250 minutes.- I use mine when needed- don't 'chit-chat' and have never had to 'buy extra minutes' even with the 'roaming (2units instead of 1)
After 3yrs of having it, I have 450+ mins on it now- (from the unused roll-over)

I highly recommend Tracfone. They have really improved from when they first began, and are reliable and cost efficient for those who want the convience of a phone- without the hassles of monthly bills.

good luck-
blu

(we had one 'motorola' tracfone, and found it was not as good as their Nokia's)

10. well i think that's correct, a post above mentions access to towers...
and that is no small consideration; the folks i know with Verizon & T-Mobile seem to have no complaints; we have MetroPCS which is great in urban corridors with some little bit here & there, but not coverage everywhere...free long distance for instance, and thankfully our business is in urban corridors so it works for us

finding the right plan is key, and although cingular has all the cool phones, toys, bells & whistles, for us they fell flat on the contract & minutes component

14. Check out this site
http://www.phonescoop.com/

It really is one of the best as far as info for cell phones are concerned. Matching a phone that you like, with a map that works for you and a plan you can afford is the key and it's not always easy to do. As I said up thread, I used to work in the industry, but they change things so fast that doing comparative homework before signing on the dotted line can't be shortcut at all.

T-Mobile is all GSM and as long as you are in their coverage areas, it should work just fine for you. Last I knew, they had no agreements to allow you to piggyback on GSM towers owned by any other company though (which means no roaming charge ever because you just can't do it at all).

Verizon generally has a good coverage area, both Urban and Rural, but they do have dead spots no matter what their commercials lead you to believe.

If the phone is what draws you first, pick that phone then find a carrier with a map and plan that you can live with. I always suggest that people actually do it the other way around though. Pick a map and a plan that fits where you travel then pick the best phone that fits your needs that that carrier offers.

62. I got the Nokia 2600 which I think was a step up from the
basic phone. You get a lot of coupons when you first but the plan. I went with Annual Air time, got 150 minutes for doing the annual plan, got 100 minutes with coupon code, added an additional 120 minutes which added 20 bonus minutes for a total of 390 minutes. The cost was $120. Broken down that's $10 per month and $.30 per minute. I went this route so I knew I had plenty of minutes and so I wouldn't have to keep adding air time each month or 2 months. One time payment for a full year, except if I needed to add minutes. I know the per minute cost is probably high, but for me it was really more economical than a traditional cell phone plan.

Hope this helps with your decision.

which is why I was perfectly happy with my old - five year - Nokia and ATT pre-paid. No text messaging, no camera, no GPS..

Which is why I need all the help I can get - and this thread has been a wonderful resource - to decide whether I want to stay with Cingular, after it bought and ruined ATT plan, or switch to another carrier like TracFone. I have never heard of it until I went to Office Depot to look at car kits and then saw the whole isle dedicated to pre-paid.

I, too, use it rarely when I need to call home that I will be late and am not next to a land phone, or when traveling - not that often - and do not want to pay the huge charges for using the hotel phones.

On edit:

What cell phone are you using? Nokia, Motorla, others?

24. When my phone died last year
and AT&T told me I would have to upgrade to a more expensive plan with more expensive new phone - I told them No thanks, since my "subscription" was up anyways, I canceled AT&T and bought a tracphone

I love it, haven't had any problems with it, and I don't use the cell phone except when on vacation or for emergencies - so it works out cheaper for me in the long run.

I often had minutes left at the end of the month with AT&T, which didn't roll over. With the tracphone - the minutes I buy are mine and stay 'active' whether I use it or not. I buy the minutes on-line so it's actually cheaper than doing it through a 'card' bought in a store.

AT&T minutes were "cheaper" per minute - but if I didn't use the minutes it actually works out to be more expensive. It was costing me $30.00/month (old plan I managed to keep active for a couple of years).

With the tracphone - I spend $20(+tax) every 3 months on the average for 60 minutes.

Compare that with at&t $360/year vs $80/year with tracphone - no brainer.

My partner was also on an old plan, she received a letter from at&t this summer telling her she would have to upgrade to a new phone or pay an additional $5 per month for "support services" on her old phone. Her subscription expired two months later, so she dumped at&t and bought a tracphone.

they gave me a nokia, my partner has motorola.

we both got the phones that were the least expensive as we do not need photo/internet/text messaging and the rest of the bells/whistles

right now you can get a "free phone" with purchase of TWO 60 minute cards for $20.00 if you order it on-line. The drawback with ordering it on line is the phone comes FED-EX and you have to sign for it.

Edited on Sat Dec-09-06 06:46 AM by 4bucksagallon
It is the one I leave in the car for emergencies. I have had cell phones since 1993 and back then they were expensive, kept you on a constant roam, and the monthly fees were ridiculous. The main thing I like about TracFone is that I buy a card with double minutes (400=800) and it has been a year and I still have 150 minutes on the card with NO monthly fees. I will be renewing the card which originally cost, if I remember correctly about $80 in january. They do not have the bells and whistles like taking pics or vids, but they do have text messaging. I can't find anything wrong with them, for someone who just wants to have the security of being in touch while on the road. The plan I signed up for was a yearly plan with no need to buy a card every month or whatever.

27. Tracfone
Even here in the environs of Southwestern New Mexico, where it is 50 miles to the next town, Tracfone works just fine. Saves me a significant amount of dough since I don't use the phone much. I probably pay about $20 a month and it wouldn't cost that much but my old Dad hates computers and email.

For those of us who don't use the phone very much, it's a good deal.

28. Yes and run away as fast as you can
My hubby has used them and they have an intractable policy of phones being delivered only with a signature. When we weren't home (we work) they refused to re-route it or waive this requirement. The customer service rep told us they did but it kept coming the original way. They were rude and lied repeatedly to get off of the phone. They also stick to a script rigidly because they are probably in a call center in India and can't divert to actually understand and help.

We don't use them anymore because of this. Bad experience.

37. if you go into any
Wal-mart (uggh, I know) Target, K-mart, or "Family Dollar"- you can buy a Tracfone without needing to sign anything-

I know what you mean about trying to get through on the phone- but that has changed a LOT in the last few years. You can do most anything you need to, add minutes, set up texting etc. online- no need to use their phone assistance- And if you do get a customer service rep who is difficult to deal with, you can always hang up, and call again- it's a toll free # and I've found the folks to be very helpful the few times I've needed to talk 'in person'.

Sorry you had a bad experience- I think the 'signature requirement' has come about since homeland security, and all the 'hype' about disposable phones being used to plan'terror' escapades.

29. depends on how much you use the phone -- it's kind of expensive
Edited on Sat Dec-09-06 10:05 AM by bedazzled
10 cents a minute ... i've been using them for over a year and have been very pleased
with their service. i don't use the phone much, and don't roam much, so i'm not a
heavy user. just use it for the school, and because there are no longer pay phones.

you can get their phones at cvs or target on sale for $19.99 (a very bare bones
phone). target also has a 400 minute card on sale for $79.00 -- which can't
be beat! it's very easy to recharge the minutes, and they occasionally send good
phone time offers via email.

i believe that their customer service is in india, which is a minus to me. the only
problems i've had with the phones are, in florida right after wilma last year, i was
unable to use the phone -- the service went down. i'm not sure whether all cell phones
went down at the same time. i also was aggravated by trying to activate a new phone
for my mom at christmastime last year. they didn't have enough customer service agents,
it took me days to get through.

if you just use the phone for emergencies, it's a great deal!

54. Thank you. Yes, I use it rarely, only when away from a land phone
and while traveling and not wanting to use the hotel phones. Again, not often.

What brand of cell phone are you using?

59. my phone right now is a nokia - a little bigger than the newer phones
a few weeks ago i asked at radio shack about getting a new battery for it.
they said that it would cost $60 to replace the battery! when cvs had a
sale for a new phone (a motorola - newer and smaller) at $19.99 - i
picked one up. i've had the nokia for over a year, and the battery still
works (knock wood) but when it goes i'll transfer my minutes to the new phone.
they let you keep the number.

the one thing nobody has mentioned is that, if you lose the phone, you lose
the minutes! if you're the kind of person who loses things a lot, it might
not be a good choice for you.

when we were moving from nj to fl i used the phone a lot. it was expensive,
but not compared to hotel phones or payphones ($1.40 to call across the street -
when you can FIND ONE!) i had no problem with connections during that time.

if i wasn't concerned about microwaving my brain, i'd use the cell phone
exclusively! southern bell hits us for $70 a month for basic landline and
internet. i can understand why people would ditch the landlines (although
when the power goes out, you're glad to have a corded phone.)

all in all, it's a great option for folks who just want a "get in touch in an
emergency" kind of phone. that's what i tell my folks - call me on the
landline if it's not an emergency. course, it tends to make you alarmed when
you do hear the cell phone ring -- eek, an emergency! just my neurosis, i guess

33. We've had TracFone for a couple of years
and are thinking of disconnecting the copper line now that the dial-up internet connection is history. I think a large number of people have already left Ma Bell behind.

39. Isn't Cricket a disposable?
I seem to remember that was the announcement I heard a few years ago. The question at the time was what was to happen with all those throw away phones? Were they going to end up in landfills or just how were they going to deal with that issue. I might be wrong, but that is what I seem to remember.

55. I have a TracFone, a motorola
Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 01:27 AM by Jennicut
I love having a tracfone, it very convient. I only use my cell phone for traveling in the car with my two daughers, ages 1 and 2. I live in a very small town in CT and still get a good signal. I like having a cell phone on me as I travel alot to my parents house 1/2 hr away with the girls and coming back at night up the windy country roads with no houses around it makes me feel better if the car ever breaks down. Because I don't really use it that often, I don't have to worry about paying for it monthly. Its not fancy but its there for me when I need it.

I traveled in case I broke down. They are cheap and work fine. I wouldn't buy one if you plan to talk on it everyday because then it gets expensive.

60. You can buy in store but get extra minutes using online promotion code
I recently bought a Motorola C139 camera speaker Tracfone that was on sale at Target since I had a special Target discount coupon. I also bought a minutes card giving me a year of service. However, I went online to Tracfone's website before I added my minutes from the card and found a special promotion code for when you buy C139. Using that promotion code gave me double minutes beyond the minutes on the card I had purchased. I have been quite pleased with the phone and reception so far.
Just be sure to check the internet Tracfone website for special deals so you don't miss out on specials that you could miss if you only buy a phone and minute card at a store.

63. I have Net10 which is owned by tracfone. I love it.
I spend 15 dollars a month and only pay for what I actually use. 10 cents a minute even for long distance and roaming, no daily fees. Unused minutes roll over from month to month but you still have to buy a $30 card every sixty days to keep your number active. And so far I haven't had any connection problems in and or around the Detroit metro area/ suburbs.

It's a no frills service but that's exactly what I was looking for: CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP.

66. Is Net 10 still viable? I'm seeing it in fewer and fewer places.
I researched the prepaid wireless thing about 6 months ago, and concluded that Net 10 would be the cheapest, but I didn't buy any phone at the time.

Now, when I'm looking again, it's not really at Target anymore, nor is it listed at other places where you can upload minutes or buy minutes.

Any info? Thanks.

I can rarely get a signal most places. None in my house, which really sucks. Once my minutes run out, I'm switching to something else.

65. My Tracfone's 6 years old.
I've gone from California to Pa., NY and Idaho with it. Never had a problem yet. I live literally across the road from the Pacific Ocean and have trouble with radio reception - but not with my phone. It's cheap; easy to reload minutes over the Net. Very convenient.

67. I have T-Mobile and I like it fairly well.
I live in the middle of east bumble-fart, so our cell coverage is kind of spotty here. I can get a signal in my house but not a strong one. In a metro area or within about 5 miles of an interstate, however, I have ALWAYS had a signal. Hubby has a contract with Verizon and there are times when I have had coverage and he hasn't, so I don't feel too bad about my T-Mobile phone.

I like the T-Mobile pay as you go plan that lets you use pay 10 cents per minute as long as you buy more than $100 of air time per year. No access fees, no worry about the minutes being lost/expiring and no contract that has you married to them forever.

My In-laws swear by Tracphone, and they all seem to be happy with the coverage they get. They ARE in a more metro area most of the time, however, so I dunno if I'd have the same level of coverage where I'm at.

YMMV.

I do have a Nokia phone--I guess it is probably outdated now because it isn't a flip or slide phone and it doesn't do pictures or even windows (sorry, that IS a bad joke and I know it!) I've liked the phone just fine and it really does seem to be a workhorse. Certainly it has stood up under my haphazard mistreatment.

Good luck with your phone search, my only suggestion is to be sure and look at your coverage maps and make sure you will have coverage in most of the places you tend to be most often.

Regards!

Laura

And they both seem to be about the same. They both drop calls periodically and there are dead areas with both.
