Poll question: Should I buy a Roomba?
I have white tile floors and one large parrot who loves to toss seed everywhere. I spend my mornings sweeping & mopping. I would rather be chatting with DU.

Whisk the dirt out of your home without lifting a finger. A patented 3-stage cleaning system uses a side brush to first clean along the edges of walls and into corners, 2 counter-rotating brushes to then scoop up dirt, dust and pet hair into the bin and finally a powerful vacuum to remove any particles remaining on the surface. Utilizing Dirt Detect™ technology, this vacuum robot intuitively detects dirtier areas and responds by increasing its cleaning intensity. Set the vacuum loose in a room while you're at work or running errands and come back to a thoroughly cleaned floor. This Club Bonus Pack includes a self charging home base, extra virtual wall unit and a remote control.

Product Features:
Bagless bin is easy to empty and eliminates the need to replace bags
Easy-to-clean filter effectively traps dust and other small particles
120-minute cleaning cycle per battery charge (approximately 3 medium-size rooms)
iRobot AWARE™ robot intelligence system helps navigate the Roomba around a room to clean every inch of the floor
Virtual Wall® sensor confines the Roomba to an area ranging from 3' – 8' long
Edge cleaning teams the spinning side brush with wall-following technology to grab dirt and debris from wall edges, under the bed and other hard-to-reach places
Set the Roomba to max to clean multiple rooms in a single cleaning cycle or for extra-duty cleaning after a family gathering
Scheduled cleaning mode cleans for up to 60 minutes from the specified time and returns the robot to its self-charging Home Base™ once it's done
Steer the vacuum with the remote control for another cleaning option
16-hour refresh charge extends the life of the battery to clean longer without interruption
Works on wood, tile, linoleum, vinyl and most carpets
Includes 1 Roomba vacuuming robot, 1 cleaning tool, 1 Home Base, 1 fast charger (3-hour charge time), 1 APS battery, 2 Virtual Wall (requires 2/D and 2/AA batteries; not included), 1 remote control and 1 extra filter
Dimensions: 13.5"l x 13.5"w x 3.5"h

1. Yes.
Here's a very entertaining description of the interaction of Roombas and pets (in this case, cats). Your parrot might like it, too.

they came out with another one called a scoomba(?) something like that which mops the floor and dries it as well.

I'm on my way out to buy more mosquito netting to drape over my canopy.

15. *WARNING* Parrots are terrified of robots!

Frodo was so frightened that she wouldn't move if the irobot was even in the same room. I had to move the docking/charging port so she would eat. She gotten used to hearing it bang into walls and make musical little sounds just as long as she doesn't have to look at it. :scared: I can still remember the day she was frightened by a turtle.

14. Sold!

I'd love to give one to a friend but $199 is way too much for a person who doesn't think they need a vacuum in the first place for a very small apartment.

It isn't perfect but I can only do just so much walking before my feet and legs give out. I'd rather be grocery shopping instead of sweeping or pushing around a regular vacuum.

17. I'm beginning to find that I need lots more help than an irobot can provide!

Would you like to help me shop for groceries? Doing everything sometimes makes eating ice cream for supper is easier than cooking for 1. I'm a little lonely living in a place where no one knows my name.

Darn!

I hope I don't forget the art of having a polite conversation.

22. You are so sweet!
The truth is: my body seems to be getting old & that is depressing the heck out of me. I'm almost finished with getting this place livable. I can't use the stove-top until I go to some place like Home Depot and order replacement drip pans to correctly fit under the burners. It doesn't matter that I haven't found a set of pots and pans to cook with ( I can't buy non-stick because the toxic fumes released when you cook at high temps will kill birds. Plus. I don't want pans with metal handles.) because all of the burners are very lopsided. I'm glad I bought a crock pot and a steamer.

The flatware I bought at Linen's-n-Things rusted in the dishwasher so ... more shopping (this time at Marshall's) ... and I still have to return the defective stainless steel because it's far from stainless!

I hope I'm not too out of shape to ride my trike when it finally gets here later this month.

I refuse to buy little knickknacks so the place is easy to clean without all my dust catchers. I miss my rocks! I know my next drive south will be laden with crystals, paintings and statues.

I haven't taken any pictures in months but I will be again soon.

I'm sorry to hear about TheSmoker problems!

I did buy the irobot. I decided that I don't need the one that automatically mops but I've thought about it since I don't put paper under Frodo's play area and she does make a mess. The white floor is looking pretty good.

But it does find it's way out and saves me from sweeping up birdseed and parrot treats. Darn, I miss my golden retriever!

33. the bird room is job one for mine
the only thing it does not pick up is the cinnamon sticks, but i am getting a different seed mix now, since i don't want to pay for all that cinnamon to clog up my roomba. sometimes the remains of shredder toys get kinda twisted up.
i love it, but it does get bogged down in the chaos around here. it is not quite as robust as they tell you. but all in all i like mine.
i am sorely tempted to get the mopping one for the kitchen.
i would recommend getting it from somewhere like sharper image that has a real cadillac warranty. we had to take ours back twice, mostly because i dropped it on it's head.

35. i have a grey, a lori, and a small flock of budgies.
the lori is in a bathroom with a floor drain, and tile walls, and i clean up after her with a hose! they are so messy....
the roomba cleans up after the grey. the budgies live on an enclosed porch that is also where the dogs crates are. it doesn't get cleaned too often.

36. Now I understand why you'd want a Scooba. Loris love nectars!

How long did it take your Grey to accept a robot in the house? My Blue & Gold still trembles when she hears the roomba working. She will jump off of her cage and fly every time she sees it move.

I wish I had a roomba sooner. There were 4 birds and one golden retriever in my home in NY. I miss 'em but I don't miss the mess!!!

and lori poop is runny, no matter what you feed them. and stinky, too. fun birds, tho. real clowns.
