1. Sum 41........ Does This Look Infected?

http://www.islandrecords.com/sum41/home.html

Best song

Sum 41 - Still Waiting

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
Can't find hope to believe in

Drop dead a bullet to my head
Your words are like a gun in hand
You can't change the state of the nation
We just need some motivation
Three times casino eviction
Just lies and more contradiction

So tell me what would you say
I'd say its up: to me

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
Can't find hope to believe in

Ignorance and Understanding
We're the first ones to jump in line
Out of step for what we believe in
But whos left? To start the pleading
How far will we take this
It's not hard to see through the sickness

So tell me what would you say
I'd say its up: to me

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
Can't find hope to believe in

This can't last forever
Time won't make things better
I feel so alone
Can't help myself
And no one knows
If this is worthless
Tell me: so

What have we done
We're in a war that can't be won
This can't be real
I don't know what to feel

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
Can't find hope to believe in

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
Can't find hope to believe in

2. CAT POWER CAT POWER CAT POWER CAT POWER
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 05:43 AM by moz4prez
I intend to marry Cat Power. Beautiful AND nuts . . . what a combination!

The new Radiohead record, while definitely enjoyable, was subpar compared to their past efforts, even Amnesiac, which was sort of a glorified B-sides collexion.

I liked the new Bonnie Prince Billy record, "Master and Everyone," a lot. Here are the lyrics to one of the more striking songs, WOLF AMONG WOLVES

She loves a soul,
That I've never been
A dog among dogs,
A man among men
And every day,
When I come home to her
She holds a phantom,
She kisses and she hugs him
And I am not
A witness to how she loves him
Why must I live and walk,
Unloved as what I am?

Why can't I be loved as what I am?
A wolf among wolves, and not as a man among men?

She craves a home
That she can go in
A sheltered cave,
That I have never seen
Not in my life,
And not even in my dreams

Why can't I be loved as what I am?
A wolf among wolves, and not as a man among men?

3. Hail to the Thief.
To be honest, I actually liked this one quite a bit, much more so than Amnesiac. I thought a few of the songs were sketchy, but they eventually grew on me save for the Gloaming.

I haven't heard the new Oldham record, is it anywhere as good as his old Palace Brothers stuff?

4. per the new Oldham record,
I dont know, it's very sparse production. Very bare, a "stripped-down" feel to it (though most Oldham records have that "stripped-down" feel, esp. Palace Brothers :o) Very few songs featuring other session musicians.

I just have a problem with the new Radiohead record because I liked where they were going with Kid A and Amnesiac. Song lyrics this time around didn't seem quite as effective, either.

Edited on Thu Jan-01-04 11:35 PM by electricmonk
That would be on my list for one of the best of the year too. Along with Joe Strummer and the Mescalero's Streetcore. Did Sleater-Kinney's One Beat come out in 2003? If so I put that on the list too.

I don't but many mass-produced cd's 98% of what I buy I get off the bands at punk rock shows. My favorite cd of the year though was the Homeowners Second Strike cd.

But, it's a great cd! S-K rocks!

5. I created a board like this, but I'll be happy to update
Jayhawks - Rainy Day Music
Cindy Alexander - Smash
Fountains Of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
Patty Loveless - On Your Way Home
New Pornographers - Electric Version
Bangles - Doll Revolution
Michelle Branch - Hotel Paper
Radiohead - Hail To The Thief (I like them when they are more tuneful)
Barenaked Ladies - Everything To Everyone
Edie Brickell - Volcano

Some other greats:
Zwan - Mary Star Of The Sea, Pink - Try This, Terri Clark - Pain To Kill, Guster - Keep It Together, Dido - Life For Rent, Brad Paisley - Mud On The Tires, Cat Power - You Are Free, Lucy Woodward - While You Can, Fefe Dobson - self-titled, Annie Lennox - Bare, bleu - redhead, Lucinda Williams - World Without Tears, Warren Zevon - The Wind, Jennifer Hanson - self-titled, Rosanne Cash - Rules Of Travel, Plumb - Beautiful Lumps Of Coal, Ryan Adams - Rock N Roll, Dar Williams - Beauty Of The Rain, Leona Naess - self-titled, Sherrie Austin - Streets Of Heaven, Vince Gill - Next Big Thing...

Used to have Rachel Farris's Soak on the list, but her voice, which is cute at first, starts sounding too immature. Still a solid pop album at a B/B-.

Also deserves a strong honorable mention. Unfortunately, my list still probably doesn't have every deserving album. And, I want to buy a couple more 2003 albums - The Shins' album, for one.

10. A 2003 favorite, for me, was Josh Kelley's 'For The Ride Home'.
One of the songs on it, I especially loved:

Home To Me

Isn't it funny how the roads just pass us by
Isn't it crazy how we never get it right
Time is wasted on money and money wasted on lust
Treat her like a lady and she'll never get enough

'Cause it's you that I'm runnin' to baby
It's you that I'm feelin' for lately and
It's like a pain that never goes away
And it always starts today

'Cause you are home to me, 'Cause you are home to me
'Cause you are home to me, 'Cause you are home to me

Isn't it perfect how the memories feel the same
Isn't it amazing how the song remains unchanged ...

TV on the Radio!! :bounce:

I have to give this year to M83 - "Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts" w/o question, however TVOTR get a very honorable mention. ;)

And of course, Earthquake Glue by Guided by Voices, who are once again in top form. :)

Edited on Thu Jan-01-04 07:05 AM by Violet_Crumble
Forkboy! I've automatically lost all respect for you! ;) A good friend of mine put me off them for life by hyping them up and insisting I had to listen to them, so when I finally did and didn't see the magic he insisted was there, I felt a bit letdown...

2003 was a crappy year for music. The only album I can think of that was any good was Feeler by Pete Murray...

Oh, and Welcome To The Monkey House by the Dandy Warhols. How could I have forgotten that one??

20. It took me awhile to get into them
One of my friends hyped them a lot too and I didn't really see it either.Just listening to one CD doesn't do them justice though. One needs to absorb their entire body work to start appreciating them...they're monstrous!

A couple of their CD's,"Prick" and "Honky",are just them fucking off and being noisy.I can imagine someone hearing those CD's first.

Of course, with a band named Pig Destroyer on my list one can't expect much :)

23. The Wrens!
The best rock band nobody knows about....

'The Meadowlands" is fantastic, but I prefer "Secaucus," from 1996..."Meadowlands" is such a wrenching emotioanl experience, I wouldn't wanna listen to it too much as it makes me too sad. It's brilliant, but a little overwhelming.

But "Secaucus..." I've had that CD since it came out, and must have listened to it thousands of times...it's flawless and I'll never become bored with it. I wish more people were hip to The Wrens; they are truly special.

Is it still in print? If not, I'll have to visit Cheapo. :-)

Meadowlands literally has left my car once. It's hard to listen to emotionally, but it's so damn well done, I can't stop playing it.

By the way, I'm seeing Guided By Voices on the 17th. Oh, then Jay Farrar on the 18th. Not a bad weekend, eh? :7

25. Disturbed - Believe (featuring the song Liberate)
A message to all repubs and neocons everywhere:

Liberate your mind
You motherf****r, you're so narrow-minded
So narrow-minded
Liberate your mind
Now motherf****r, will you liberate your mind
This time

Bold motherf*****r
Don't limit your mind
Can;t you see that the pace
Has fallen behind
All the hate in your heart
Will be leaving you blind
So bold motherf****r
Don't you limit your mind
This time

Waiting, for your modern messiah
To take away all the hatred
That darkens the light in your eye
Still awaiting. I

"Out of Zion shall come forth a law
And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem
Nation shall not raise sword against nation
And they shall not learn war anymore
For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken

Waiting, for your modern messiah
To take away all the hatred
That darkens the light in your eye
Still awaiting.

Radiohead's Hail to the Thief. Thank God I don't have to listen to another second half of Amnesiac.
Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People. I listened to it almost every day for a month or so during the summer.
Leaving Rouge - Black Christmas single. They kick ass. This one is worth getting solely for the covers of Rise Above by Black Flag and Androgynous by The Replacements.
Blue Dahlia - 7 Chances. Local folk band, they put together a soundtrack for a black and white film. It kicks ass.
