I just had a "Curb Your Enthusiasm" moment!

Today we had snow for the first toime this year.

Needless to say, the city's a mess, with felled trees and crunched cars everywhere.

I had to buy milk, so I drove over to the supermarket. The check-out gal was Innu (Eskimo), and she asked (small-talk) if it was still snowing.

I said that it wasn't but it's supposed to snow again.

She said that she wasn't ready for snow, so I said she's have to dig her mukluks out of the closet, which I would have said to anyone.

Long pause.

She said "what makes you think I have mukluks?"

Me: "Snow boots. You know..."

Her: "oh, yeah, I know snowboots. I am an Eskimo, you know."

Me: "I didn't mean..."

Her: "And I suppose I sat up all night chewing the leather to make it nice and soft?"

Me: "Look...I..."

"Lucky I'm off in an hour... I still need to push my elderly parents onto an ice-flow"


Then the manager came over and told us both to settle down (mostly me!). Only then was I given the opportunity to pay for my groceries and get out of there.


The whole thing was just so fucking bizarre... I'm still trying to absorb/decompress it all.

The worst part is that I need to keep going to that store, because I'm saving points.

By the way, how did you know that she was Inuit? Or did you just presume she was?

This could have happened to anyone, faced with someone else super-sensitive to their heritage, but I'm sorry it had to happen to you. Maybe she was just having a bad day -- who the hell knows?

PS. Did this ruin some film's shooting schedule by any chance? (You can't edit snow scenes with no-snow scenes, of course...) We just saw the movie "Eight Below" last night -- shot in various places in B.C. substituting for Antartica. I don't know where Smithers and Stewart are! I'll have to look them up.
