M&Ms Candy Fades to Black and White- Reuters
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=583&ncid=583&e=4&u=/nm/20031230/od_nm/masterfoods_dc

<snip>
"M&M's, the colorful button-shaped candies, are about to go off color for the first time in 60 years, but it remains to be seen whether their fans love or hate the change.

The chocolate-filled sugar-coated candies, made by a division of U.S. confectioner Mars Inc., will be available in only black and white for the next few months instead of the standard six colors as part of a promotional campaign.

Mars' Masterfoods USA division, which also markets chocolate brands such as Snickers, will launch the chiaroscuro version in the United States on Dec. 31. But some stores that ran out of the colorful stock have already received supplies of the new variety."

1. WTF?!?!?!?!
BLACK AND WHITE M&M'S?!?!?!?! Come on M&M/Mars - don't be cheap. I know what this is all about. You just don't want to spring for the colored dye. Just give us the colored M&M's dammit. Quit jerking around with tradition. While we're at it, BRING BACK THE TAN M&M'S! Dammit!

32. followed by
some college lefty will demand that there be an equal number of white and black ones in every bag, then someone will ask where the brown ones are, and the yellow and the red. Then David Duke will ask for bags of nothing but white ones, and Bob Barr will demand that the white ones all have Ronnie Rayguns picture on them. Someone in Miami will see one with the Virgin Mary's picture on it and thousands will crowd a corner market store in Little Havana to see the 'miracle.' A fundy church in Texas will proclaim the black one "satanic" and burn bags of them in a parking lot of a strip mall in suburbian Dallas. Dean and Clark supporters will blame each other for the loss of the colorful ones and some idiot will jokingly suggest a CIA connection (ahem) which some bigger idiots will take seriously. Finally, Skinner and Elad will ban all discussion of M&M's unless they remain civil and we'll be left with Robb and Magic Rat doing M&M sex polls.

The word "clinical" comes to mind. Even the colors on the bag are a turn-off.

11. hey--WTF?--I already bought a bag of B&Ws about a month ago
a supermarket here had them with the wrapper promoting a contest: find a red one within the black & whites and win a gazillion dollars. needless to say there was no red one in my pack. I ate them without looking, and guess what? they tasted just like normal colored M&Ms ;)

18. reminds me of a movie I saw this weekend "Equilibrium"
matrix-y kind of futurist thing with Christian Bale.

after a 3rd WW (nukes) the totalitarian leaders eliminate all FEELING from mankind.

it was an utterly monochromatic world and the B&W M&Ms would have been a perfect fit....

23. Just like everyday life was in the Soviet Union
How apropos to the Bush Revolution!

Wasn't there a movie a few years ago, with Reese Witherspoon in it, about a couple of k-k00l kidz who went back in time into a black-and-white world, and by having lots of sex and playing rock-n-roll music, turned the world into color?

I think it also had William Macy in it, if it's any help.

Where have you gone, Reese Witherspoon?
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you,
Woo - woo - woo!
