My mom is older, from the Deep South, and has an antiquated view on race.

I am talking to her now. Here's a few of her statements. Tell me where else you may have heard these ideas:

"When I see people, I don't see color..."

AND

"Well, my friend Susie (who is black) agrees with me that... and my black friend Susie..."

Now that's the more "uplifting" part of having a discussion on race with her. She's originally from New Orleans and we still have many family members down there... I refuse to type out how she discusses race and Katrina.

Talking to her about race truly tests my patience. But she reminded me of a real world example of Colbert's character. Sadly, Colbert's irony has some basis in truth. :( We may have cast aside institutionalized (codified) racism by disbanding Jim Crow, but I think a more dangerous, subtle racism emerged afterward.
