My theory: Libs like "The Addams Family", pubs like "The Munsters".
I would take it further and say that more liberals prefer Jeannie to Bewitched, and like Laurel and Hardy over Abbott and Costello.

I bet this would be a good thesis idea for a kid taking Political Science, or in High School.

Recently, I purchased "The Addams Family" on DVD, and since the elections just got over, it got me to thinking about this.

In Addams, and Jeannie, and somewhat with Laurel and Hardy, the humor is more cerebral, and risque. With the Munsters and Bewitched, the roles in the family still seemed more rooted in tradition.

Could just be my thinking, because I am liberal and like Addams, etc.. better, but maybe there is something to it.

What think you, DU?

1. I like the Addams' myself...
Interesting to note, though, that Al Lewis (Grandpa Munster) was quite the liberal.

(Also, I like Jeannie and Bewitched equally, but prefer A&C to L&H.)

5. I agree on the Addams part...
Don't on the Bewitched thing... Anyone who doesn't see who 'wears the pants' in the
house isn't watching the same show I've watched.

Hint: It isn't Durwood... er, Dunwood... uh, Dogwood... Ach, Whatsisname. :)

7. one problem with that
the munsters were actually funny.

and grandpa was way too hip to be a reactionary conservative.

and herman, he was too nice.

12. I think the Munsters were funny.
Perhaps I am just more biased towards the Addams. The show just seemed to push the envelope a bit, with the affection shown and all, where the Munsters seemed conventional in an unconventional way, lol.

8. I preferred the Addams Family also.
IMHO, the difference between the shows was basically the Addams were rich and forced the outside world to bend to their eccentricities, while the poorer Munsters were forced to bend to the external society. So I can see liberals liking the former better.

If anyone likes these old shows and old 50's/60's albums, here is a great website (check out the weird section)...

Both were little eerie morality plays.

11. I cannot remember any of those shows - not in detail
About ten years ago or so I was watching some Jeannie re-union show, and it made me think - 'why did I ever like this show?' Then I remembered teenage male meet Barbara Eden. :wow:

But cerebral humor? Really?

I guess not really cerebral, but not in your face Jim Carrey type.

15. There was some commentary on the DVD
about other TV shows at that time, and how the censors made them show different beds and did not allow couples to really show affection. I think it was John Astin that said a psychologist said that they were actually the most well adjusted couple on tv, and had the healthiest relationship.

That show is classic. Still funny now.

A woman who exists only to serve her "master"? I don't think so.

27. Conservatives probably like "I Dream of Jeannie"....
because of the whole subservient "Yes, Master" stuff. My God, that show is a male chauvinist pig's wet dream.

"Bewitched" on the other hand, has the unmistakable gay subtext (a minority of people who are invisible and misunderstood to society at large. It's not exactly all that hidden)

29. I'm a closet FReeper...
Well, not really... but I'm a liberal and I prefer The Munsters and Bewitched. However, the main reason I prefer The Munsters is probably just 'cause I used to watch the reruns on TBS when I was in the first or second grade and would go to my grandparents' after school, so I have some good associations. I haven't watched The Addams Family enough to say much about it; your theory may be true in terms of the type of humor. However, I do think, at least in the political sense, it might be tougher to argue Jeannie over Bewitched as Samantha definitely seemed to be more of a liberated woman than Jeannie. In that sense, I would consider Bewitched the more "liberal" show.
