1. Here's how I look at it...
I love food more than I hate exercise. So, I only indulge in desserts or fattening foods IF I exercised before to earn it...NO DEFICIT SPENDING ALLOWED.

Knowing I'm going out with friends will make me get out the door or be forced to eat soup/salad instead of the steak/dessert that I want.

The other thing is competition. My wife and I both run. If I don't get out there, she'll beat me in the next 10K or 1/2 marathon. Let's just say the Mrs. is NOT a graceful winner. She still rubs in the dual-a-thon she beat me in July!

6. I enjoy exercise too,
as long as it is a walk around the lake .

It is this cold weather indoors stuff I dislike.

9. What kind of diet and have you tried Nordic walking?
Walking with poles burns more calories and gives you some upper body toning too.
google it
Rather than pay $60-$90 for a pair, I can tell you how to make the poles with 1/4" pvc pipe and a few other inexpensive items from the hardware store. I love it. Easier on the joints too.
Wanna see my 1500 (or 1200) calorie diet?
I've lost 35 pounds since the first of the year.
Good luck.

11. I was going to pm the diet, but what the heck.
It's only bandwidth anyway.
I wrote this up for my dentist who wanted to try it.

Start here, to figure out how many calories a day it takes to MAINTAIN your present weight:
http://walking.about.com/cs/calories/l/blcalcalc.htm

Then go here to see the 1200 and 1500 calorie per day diets:
http://walking.about.com/cs/walkoflife/a/dietportions.htm

Then go here to see what a "serving" is:
http://walking.about.com/cs/walkoflife/a/dayservings.htm
I printed the diet and the servings and stuck them on a kitchen cabinet door until we got familiar with it.
Now it's just second nature.

Example:
At my beginning weight of 275, I "needed" 2811 calories a day to maintain that weight.
I went for the 1500 cal. diet around the first of this year.
Now at 235 lbs. it would take 2500 cal. to maintain, so I'm still 1000 cal. below that.
If you do the math, my average weight loss has been about 4-5 pounds a month. It went on slowly and it comes off the same way.

Walking 3 miles a day is a big part of my weight loss program. If you use poles, you increase calories burned by about 20%.
Google "Nordic Walking".
I can show you how to make the poles from 1/4" PVC pipe for a few bucks.

Tips:
You will be eating smaller portions.
You can help "fool" yourself and feel satisfied by using smaller plates.
Your servings fill up the plate and (maybe more important) you CLEAN your plate at every meal.
Another "head game":
I now start each day with a "bank" of calories. SO throughout the day I decide how I'm going to spend each one. It's amazing the things I pass up now because I'm "saving" my calories for something better. Anticipation of future benefits can be very satisfying. Plus make you feel very virtuous. :-)

The smaller portions took a little getting used to, but it really doesn't feel like a diet any more. It's just the way we eat now.
The most important thing is that you don't have to give up anything.
We had tried the lo-carb diet and in a week were dying for pasta or a baked potato.
Eat at least 3 meals a day. Sometimes I "graze" or snack throughout the day.
When I get hungry, I eat a little bit. If I'm hungry again later, I have another snack.
We still eat our biggest meal at night.
ALL food now has caloric content on the package, so you can know just how many calories that turkey sandwich has.
Right down to the mayo.
We DO NOT EAT low-fat stuff. We use real butter and olive oil. Just in moderation.
Things actually taste better to me.
The lo-fat, chemical stuff doesn't satisfy your need/craving for the real thing.
NO SUGAR FREE SODAS, etc. That stuff is BAD for you.

THERE ARE NO MAGIC PILLS OR MAGIC DIETS.
Period.
It's a simple matter of physics.
If you burn more calories than you take in, YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT.
Guaranteed.

Good luck.

15. Thanks for the WalkingAbout website.....I intend to really check it out...
Michael and I joined a local health club in early January. I was 5'9" and 221, he 5'9" and 189. That first day I spent about an hour on a treadmill (low speed, level). Today I did 4 miles in just over 59 minutes at varying elevations. I also have gotten into stationary bikes and some swimming (can't handle the stair-climber). I also use the weight machines and have a somewhat developed upper body for the first time in my life (I call it my "man-body"). Started out wearing size 42-44 jeans. Now I can squeeze into a 34. I'm one happy camper!

That first week at the gym, I realized that it was stupid for me to beat my brains out on a treadmill and then eat a bacon double cheeseburger from Hardee's. In the nine months since then, I've had three burgers, all very special for one reason or other. We also use butter, olive oil and peanut oil, strictly whole grain bread, whole grain wild rice and pasta (I can't tell a difference in the pasta), LOTS of fresh fruit (more this year so far that in the last 30 years), and yogurt. Ground turkey breast makes a kick-ass spaghetti/lasagna sauce, and we both love seafood.

The hardest part for me as a southern boy was cutting WAY back on fried foods. Fried oysters are my all-time favorite food and a few weeks ago we went to my favorite local oyster bar and ordered a dozen fried. They were excellent, as always, but by the fifth one my face felt oily. By the ninth I really didn't want any more, and I wound up leaving a couple uneaten. Trust me, thats never happened before. Who AM I and what have I done to myself?

Long story shot, today I weigh in around 185 and Michael is at 167. A mix of lower fat, better carbs, and regular exercise worked. Life is good!

12. For the poles:
My old joints are only about a year younger than yours. The poles also give you remarkable stability. Works your shoulders, pects, arms, etc. And you'll move faster once you get the hang of it.

I got everything at Lowes except for the handgrips.
Did I say 1/4"? Sorry, it's 1/2" pvc.
Get the "schedule 40" pipe. It has thicker walls, more sturdy than the lighter stuff.
It usually comes in 8' lengths, I think. Maybe 10'
Anyway, stand up nice and straight and grip the pipe in front of you with one end on the floor and your forearm parallel to the floor, elbow bent 90 degrees. To the top of your fist is the right length. You can cut pvc with just about any kind of saw, or they might even do it for you at the store.
Look helpless.;-)

You'll also need a couple of the little 1/2" rounded end caps for the pole bottoms.
Just jam them on, don't have to glue them.

Now go around to the hardware aisle where the hooks, latches, and cabinet furniture thingys are and get a package of 1 1/8' rubber chair tips. These go on the pole ends, over the caps. Make a nice non-slip end. As they wear out you can replace them. They fit really tight, so I found I had to slit the side with a razor knife to get the worn ones off.

The only place I could find bicycle handgrips was WalMart :-(.
If you're near a bike store they should have a wide selection. The ones I got have a handy plastic flange around the bottom and fit snugly down over the pipe.

For technique, Google Nordic Walking.
If you've ever done any cross country skiing, it's a lot like that.
Enjoy!

16. I've lost 32 pounds since May, with a month or two of screwing up.
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 07:16 PM by sfexpat2000
Still have about 28 lbs to go.

I eat a huge lunch of tofu type stuff and vggies. Take some time on the exercise bike every day, do a little toning with weights but mostly I walk twice a day. I hate pointless motion so I've had to find a walk that I REALLY like and sometimes take music or a phone. Walking is also a great stress reducer for me, anyway.

I get impatient but, that's all right. It's nice to feel lighter inside and out. :)

17. I'm having food issues
It might be good that I'm not starving myself anymore like I used. Now I am starving myself before and during work and binging afterwards and on the weekends. I have gotten fat (those small sweaters and size 2 jeans ddon't fit anymore) and I don't want to be seen in public. My husband doesn't care when I eat "everything" because he thinks that it is good that I am not so skinny and that maybe I am not even as heavy as I should be.
I really need to find a counselor here.
