The WAR on Halloween!!
Ok, I wake up this morning and read two VERY disturbing posts.

10 Year Old Boy Grew His Own Pumpkins For Halloween - They Were Stolen
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x5773120

7 Year Old Turned Away From Trick-Or-Treating At Six Flags (She Was Too Tall)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=5772752&mesg_id=5772752

This my friends is proof that there is in fact a war on Halloween! When home grown pumpkins are stolen from a 10 year old, or a 7 year old is turned away from Trick or Treating, how much more proof do we need!!??

1. In all seriousness, there are many evangelicals who believe Halloween
is an evil, Satanic holiday.

4. I got freaked out at the craft stores this year
Too many "Happy Harvest!" signs cheek by jowl with the usual Halloween stuff. I got the distinct impression that was a fundie alternative to the "eeeevil" holiday. Good grief. :eyes:

12. No kidding...
I live just below the buckle of the bible belt (right around the fly, I would guess). There are a lot of people around here that think Halloween is evil. After all, dressing up as a power ranger and asking for candy is pretty much satanic worship, isn't it?

5. Funny. I was thinking of a post with the same title, but for different reasons
I've seen three churches in my area advertising a "Fall Festival" this year, for Halloween. There is clearly a war on Halloween from Evangelical sorts. Odd, since the name "Halloween" is the Christian name attached to the pagan fall festival.

6. Halloween has pagan roots, but...
All Saint's Day (the eve of which is All Hallows' Eve) & All Soul's Day are not just Christian, they're CATHOLIC! Even scarier for some.

I'm disappointed in Jack Chick. He's got several tracts preaching against the Satanic holiday of Halloween. And his hatred for The Whore of Babylon is obvious. Surely, he'll be inspired to publicize the link betwen the two!

(Always fun to scoff at Jack.)

7. It's like Easter or Christmas
It's a pagan holiday that the Christians (they weren't Catholic yet, there were no Protestants to make them Catholics) grafted onto their own religion. Hallow E'en is a Christian name, but many of the traditions relate to the old pagan fall festivals.

10. The Roman Catholic Church existed before Martin Luther was born.
He didn't "make them" Catholic. If any of your ancestors were Christians back then, they were RC--unless they were Orthodox.

15. Damn right--they stole Samhain
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 10:15 AM by MorningGlow
Just like Eostre, Yule, Beltane, and all the other important days of the year.

Doesn't matter, though--they can call it anything they want and co-opt all of it, but them there Kee-rist-ee-yins don't know how to handle it when the veil thins on October 31, while we pagans do! :)

Funny how they stole it but now want to disavow it, though....That's okay, they can give it back--we'll take it!

8. Christianity itself absorbed many aspects of paganism.
Made it easier to convert the pagans.

9. I say we spend the entire 2 months BEFORE Halloween going around
saying Happy Halloween next year and say it as often as possible to people we KNOW don't celebrate it, just as payback. This WAR on Halloween must stop now!

16. Confuse-a-Christian
Say "Happy New Year" instead (that's what it was in the Celtic tradition, after all)--then they don't know how to respond!

11. I think the real reason a lot of people dislike Halloween
is that they have to give out gifts without getting any back in return. I am so tired of people in the city complaining about kids from out surrounding rural area who come into their neighborhood to trick-or-treat. So much for the theory that Americans love children!

13. Holy Shit people are selfish!
I haven't heard this one before, but I certainly believe it to be true. The rethuglian party has shown me just how selfish and greedy people are.
