Another installment of Beetwasher's ongoing series of "This is NOT The Onion!":

Rick Santorum and the "Eye of Mordor"

In an interview with the editorial board of the Bucks County Courier Times, embattled Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has equated the war in Iraq with J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings." According to the paper, Santorum said that the United States has avoided terrorist attacks at home over the past five years because the "Eye of Mordor" has been focused on Iraq instead.

"As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else," Santorum said. "It's being drawn to Iraq and it's not being drawn to the U.S. You know what? I want to keep it on Iraq. I don't want the Eye to come back here to the United States."

1. Ugh, I'm going
to get my beloved Leather bound edition of LOTR out and give them all a shower. Quite frankly I'm surprised Mr. Man on Dog would even read something so sacrilegious.

2. Obviously he has never read the books.
Viggo said it best.

Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn in the LOTR movies)

“I’m not anti-Bush; I’m anti-Bush behavior,” Mortensen told Progressive magazine. “In other words, I’m against cheating, greed, cruelty, racism, imperialism, religious fundamentalism, treason, and the seemingly limitless capacity for hypocrisy shown by Bush and his administration.”

"I don't want to make him that important," Mortensen said. "I believe Bush in many ways is ruled by others. He could possible be a Saruman, one who thinks he has the power, but does not. But he could be a Boromir. But at the same time, in the end Boromir rises above his own desire for power. No, I think he is most similar to a Ringwraith."

7. Good question
I am astonished again and again to find out the Republican leading lights more or less just fell into the job. It's one thing to have a right wing party, but having a right wing party led by second rate people is another. I can't believe how many of them got nominated or elected only because the other guy resigned, got indicted or died and the GOP couldn't come up with anyone else fast enough. On the other hand, maybe the real powers need a bunch of good looking(?) empty headed empty shirts to run things.

11. what a bizarre and misguided comparison
I thought fundies didn't read the LOTR - afraid it would taint them, or something....

God, he'll say anything to get re-elected, even coopt something that could be seen as against everything he and his kind stand for....

12. I Think He's Too Stupid To See The Incredible Irony Of His Analogy
This pic sort of encapsulates it:

13. yeah, that used to be estimated prophet's sigpic here
rather ironic....

ah, but it is likely that the right uses some of the same analogies, literary and otherwise, to make their points. Bizarre, ain't it? Kind of like * talking about Camus - I think it was Camus. I highly doubt * has any understanding about what Camus said or thought. :eyes:

and try absorbing the theme about unchecked power and corruption etc...

And won't this piss off his fundie supporters? Referencing that 'heathen' literature (or movie most likely in his case)
