5. To sushi-lovers:
What's to like about it?

Obviously, all of the above chioces apply to my feelings about it. I gave it a second chance last week at my friend's birthday party, at a highly-rate Japanese restaurant.

I still don't get it.

Uck.

13. Different people like different things.
I absolutely love it and would eat it everyday. You seem to not only dislike it, but have some weird issue with it.

22. I honestly don't get how people could like it.
I also hate tomatoes, but I can comprehend how others might love them. They have a taste.

As far as I can tell, sushi is just a clump of tasteless white sticky rice with some completely uncalled for, possibly disease-causing raw fish (also mostly tastely, aside from the raw fish taste), tasteless, hard-to-chew, paper-like seaweed, and a daub of so-hot-it-obliterates-any-taste-it-might-have wasabi. I really really don't get it.

Read rabrrrrr's post below.

I don't understand how people can eat organ meats, but I accept that some people truly like them, and I don't think they're just pretending.

29. Yeah, I know what it is - and not necessarily always raw fish
That's not my hang-up. In fact, the raw fish, as far as I can tell, is the only part that ever has any taste to it whatsoever.

It's just so... bland. With really hot sauce.

What more is there to it, other than white rice rolled up in seaweed with a tiny little vegetable bit or raw fish bit, and some super-hot sauce, pray tell?

32. Have you ever had a spider roll?
Those have a lot of flavor. It's a fried soft-shell crab with avocado, cucumber and flying fish roe. Or maybe you just have to accept that it's not for you. Order something else at Japanese restaurants. Japanese cuisine goes beyond just sushi. There's plenty of cooked meat, fish and noodle dishes for people who don't like sushi.

44. The fish used for sushi wasn't just pulled out of the local river
Sushi grade fish has to go through a much stronger inspection to insure the safety of the fish.

But the biggest misconception is it's all about raw fish. Actually there are several types of sushi rolls that have absolutely nothing to do with raw food. Shrimp Tempura is a great starter roll for someone trying Sushi for the first time. There are even vegetarian rolls.

But I love the stuff - can't get enough of it. I'm looking forward to finding the best that Toronto has to offer in the world of Sushi

31. you just about summed it up there
sushi is just a whole different experience than other types of food. It can be more delicate in flavor.

if you want something to kind of ease you into it, order a phoenix roll, a dragon roll or another highly flavored roll.

37. Sushi is not raw fish. Often times it is cooked or prepared
to some degree, aka, not raw.

And you don't even have to really like fish to enjoy it.

Moreover, the seaweed is very thin and is very easy to chew, it is usually barely noticeable (unless you have some mental block that reminds you it is seaweed, which happens from time to time).

Sushi is about the combination of vinegar-treated rice, which holds in the flavors of the fish and vegetables or seasoning rolled within.

Some people sincerely don't like it, but many people who don't either have some irrational fear of it (raw fish, gross, seaweed, gross) or have had bad or cheap sushi in the past.

I recommend trying (if you get curious) some of the "safe" sushi dishes first, using meats such as shrimp, crab, tuna, salmon, or yellowtail. Stay away from eel your first few times. And definitely stay away from sashimi, it will weird you out... Its good, but it will weird you out.

My all-time favorite: Philadelphia rolls. Rice and seaweed rolls containing smoked salmon, avocado, and cream cheese. They are amazing.

12. How about this: Totally misunderstood by most people as meaning fish.
Edited on Mon Oct-16-06 10:16 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Say "sushi" to someone, and they think "raw fish". Which is, of course, totally wrong. Sushi is merely the rice with some sweet vinegar and cooked and made in a special way.

It is often served with raw fish on top, or other toppings: I've had raw horse, whale, cooked eel, cooked shrimp, raw shrimp (almost threw that one up: the texture is sooooo fucking grotesque), sea urchin, roes of a great many kinds, vegetables, etc. etc. etc. These are all "nigiri sushi", meaning it is sushi with something on top.

But then it's always called in the format "(topping) sushi", as in "unagi sushi" or "toro sushi".

And of course, there is also sushi rolled in nori, which is called maki. Sushi stuffed into a roll of fried tofu is inari, and then there's the wonderful bowl version which is a bowl of sushi and the sashimi and/or other toppings all placed on top. That's called Chirashi sushi. I like chirashi, but whenever I have it, there is a part of me that really wishes I were eating nigiri. I find nigiri more fun.

36. Now, see, I think you probably avoided the Japanese calimari.
Because if you did the raw squid, I think you'd be seeing this in a totally different light. :)

Or not--that's just *my* favorite. (Although I could probably suck down a pound of yellowtail, I think.)

I like sushi. I don't know why. But I like rice, I like seafood, I like trying different things with different textures and so forth, so for me, sushi is kind of a treat, with the balance of bland (or rather, "cool" and "umame" flavors, the cool cucumbers, the more umame nori, the slight malty bite of the sticky rice) and the more rich, salty flavors of the fish itself and the soy sauce (must have soy sauce--it's like Japanese ketchup) and the zing from the hot wasabi and ginger. To me, it's not about sitting down and eating, but sampling it all, comparing, seeing what you like and what you don't.

And it could very well just be a turn-off texturally if you find it "slimy" or "chewy" or the temperature is too "lukewarm"--it is very different from Western norms of how food should be served, and what starts as "blandness" can develop into intense fishy flavor once you concentrate on it--a shock after having fish cooked to flavorlessness (I once had tuna at a "good" restaurant that tasted like a dishrag). The wasabi can be too hot, and the soy sauce too salty--depending on the preparation, and how much you use, especially if you aren't accustomed to using it. I think it can be an acquired taste for some, because it's kind of like a learning experience as to what you want to order, and how you want to eat it. I have found having some Kirin and sake have helped in my "learning" about it.

And of course, if you never develop the taste (I can't eat certain things because of texture, myself; my husband has to coax me to eat stuffed artichoke, --it's a grisly thing, artichokes--breaded, Italian style--a little greasy, and there's that, that..."choke" thing going on...stringy), there's always stir-frys (mmm, hibachi grill...)
