Cat owners: Do your males fight for the alpha position?
I just had to break up a huge fight. What is so great about being alpha male?

1. alpha males get all the sex.
That's basically the whole point.

3. They're cats.
Not exactly the brainiest animals on Earth.

That's why suddenly they jump up and run into the other room. Instinct is telling them there's a herd of antelope in there.

4. Yeah, but *they* don't know that!
The instinct to mate is far greater than the lack of working testicles. :)

5. We have a super alpha cat
He's completely nuts. He even growls and hisses at our (human) neighbors when they're sitting out on their deck. :D

The other cats are sufficiently under his control.

7. Not at all.
Perhaps that would be different if I also had a female cat, but I've got 2 boys and they play-fight, but there aren't any alpha issues.

It's just kind of understood that the older one gets to eat first. They each prefer different sleeping areas (or they share), so that's not an issue. Honestly, there was very, very little fighting even when the little one first got here.

They're almost exactly a year apart. Riley turned 2 in September and Spencer just turned 1.

8. Mine do.
Two elderly, fixed indoor cats. They don't fight as much as they used to.

But, if the (larger) white one's sitting on my lap & the stripey one shows up--the white one moves.

10. I broke up a fight between my Crow and Albert the neighbor cat...
you should see my hand. Two nice deep long fang gashes on the palm. Very bloody. I easily got the worst of it. The cats are fine, my hand is killing me.

11. No, my male cats are wimps.
One gets harrassed by the other male cat and the two girls, and the other is afraid of plastic bags.

12. I lost one of my males. The one in the
signature. But when I had two of them they would fight. And they were both fixed.

13. My males are total wimps. The alpha is a tiny female.
She dishes out shit on a regular basis. No one will challenge her.

16. Not just sex
But the alpha male (or female) gets the choice window spots for solar energy collection, the first dibs on any chicken dropped on the floor, first go round with any new catnip toys and so on. It's not about the sex, but the power, prestige and privelige.

17. My male thinks he rules, but he doesn't.
He's twenty lbs, but my 9lb and 14lb females routinely get the better of him. He starts it-they finish it.

19. My two male cats don't
I'm not sure which one would be considered the alpha.

Now my dogs on the other hand, my female is definately the alpha over the male and she lets him know this several hundred times a day. She's such a bitch. ;-)

20. My boys fight almost constantly.
It's their favorite form of entertainment. When they're not fighting they are either begging for more attention, eating, or else innert.

I can't figure out if one of them is the alpha. They share everything and they're inseperable. There is nothing that one of them gets or does first. I think they just like to fight.

22. No -- one is really wimpy. He's afraid of our bunny and our goldfish.
The two boy kitties do gang up on my poor 14-year-old princess and try to ambush her when she goes down to use the litterbox. So, guess who gets to escort the lady to and from the box a few times a day? :eyes:
