Men Arrested For Beating Duck To Death (Duck Stole Their Fishing Bait)
<snip>

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Two men are facing felony charges of animal cruelty for killing a duck they said kept stealing their bait while they were fishing, authorities said.

Santos Murcia-Rosa, 23, and Roberto Landaverde-Mancia, 22, both of North Lauderdale, were arrested Monday, the Broward Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The pair were fishing at a lake in North Lauderdale when ducks began taking bread they were using as bait, according to the statement. One duck they tried to move away with a stick kept returning and the men started hitting the duck, according to a statement Murcia-Ross gave detectives.

The animal cruelty charge is a third degree felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison, the sheriff's office said. Murcia-Rosa was being held on $10,000 bond. Landaverde-Mancia was released on $2,500 bond, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's office said. It was not clear why the bond amount was different and not known if they had lawyers.

5. Cool story: my late Dad and ducks.
We LOVE ducks so much we feel guilty eating duck at a Chinese restaurant.

Dad LOVED ducks. He was an artist, painting mostly Great Lakes freighters...and ducks.

He lived in St. Clair Michigan on the mile-wide St. Clair River. There's a section of the river across from the town with a sand bar. It's call the "Flats" and it's famous for duck hunters during the season.

Dad used to wake up an hour before sunrise during duck season, park in the lot downtown on the river, and wait for the hunters to anchor on the "Flats." He'd then wait for the flocks to come in to feed, and as they were coming in, he'd start honking his car horn to scare off the flocks.

He was so PROUD of that.
