Poll question: Favorite Johnny Depp Movie
Don't usually get all wrapped up in actors, but Johnny has tremendous talent. Probably the greatest actor of this era. My favorite Depp film? Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. His portrayal of Hunter Thompson is spooky good.

1. "Cry Baby" would be my favorite

I really hope the funding the timing and the fates coincide to allow another go at The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

27. He nailed the Boston-area accent.
Didnt overdo it like Charles Emerson Winchester or how Kevin Costner did in Thirteen Days.
Great Flick!

4. I was honest enough to choose Pirates, though there are others I respect
more. Just don't enjoy watching them as much. Ed Wood would lead that group. But I've seen Ed Wood twice, and Pirates over a dozen times (mostly on DVD), and still like to watch it when I'm bored.

5. I have to say, though, that while is he is very talented
He's not the greatest actor of his era. His characters are charming, but are usually simple composites of other characters, and he has an aversion, maybe even an inability, to do highly emotional characters. I don't think he's any better than Leonardo di Capprio or Tom Hanks or several others. I think he has more artistic integrity in the scripts he chooses and the directors he works with, usually. But then again, the main artistic integrity in Pirates came from his and Geoffrey Rush's (there's a much better actor than Depp) roles, not from the directing or screenplay. And he did "Once Upon a Time in Mexico," which would have killed his popular career if he hadn't done Pirates to make up for it.

Great actor, but not the greatest. People will burn out on him after Pirates 3, I fear. He'll be like Tom Cruise--cool to hate, regardless of what he does. He'll still be talented, but the DU Two Minute Hate threads will one day be aimed at him.

7. I would like to see Hanks or DiCaprio go through an entire movie
without uttering a word, like Depp did in Edward Scissorhands. And yet, his emotions spoke volumes. Tremendous piece of acting.

10. Hanks was offered that role, as was Cruise
Both turned it down. But apparently Tim Burton thought they could handle it, based on his auditions.

11. Hanks might have been able to pull it off. But DiCaprio?
Depp takes chances, stretches the boundaries in most all of his roles.

21. Why not? I mean, he would have been too young at the time, but
He's done well. He's earned two Oscar nominations, same as Depp, though both should have gotten more. DiCaprio pulls off some great performances. Gilbert Grape, Titanic, Aviator, Basketball Diaries, Total Eclipse, Romeo+Juliet (not a great film, but DiCaprio and Harold Perinauld put out great performances in it).

I like Depp better than I like DiCaprio (Or Hanks), I just think he's so stylized sometimes that his characters don't have full range of emotions. It's amusing to watch, but not always as fulfilling. Compare him to Geoffrey Rush (my vote for best living film actor at the moment). Rush's characters are so much more emotionally complete, and yet he still manages the diversity of Depp's characters. Depp was brilliant in Pirates, but think of Rush's "cursed" speech on the ship, and the range of emotions he goes through without breaking character. "For too long I've been parched of thirst and unable to quench it." His eyes and voice go from anguish to pleading to playful humor to cold steel all in one monologue. That's not easy, and he made it look very easy. Depp is great, but I don't think he's that great, yet.

26. Dead Man, hands down. Jim Jarmusch's best film to date,
in my opinion. And that soundtrack by Neil Young is absolute perfection. If you haven't watched Dead Man, you can't imagine what you're missing.

22. Your judgement of his performance in Fear and Loathing will depend
on your familiarity with Hunter Thompson. If you knew a lot about Hunter, and had seen interviews with him, you would come away from watching Fear and Loathing in utter amazement! Otherwise, you might feel that Depp gives a rather buffoonish performance.
