Who else has Betty Friedan screamed at, besides me?
It was at a book signing. She was talking with me about big businesses swallowing up little businesses. I listened to her and was about to tell her about my experience in a large book store chain, and how awful it had been before I quit, and suddenly her face darkened. She shouted, out of nowhere-

"YOU YOUNG PEOPLE ALL HAVE THIS BLANK LOOK ON YOUR FACES AND I CAN'T STAND THAT! YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THE WORLD WORKS THESE DAYS! I'M SO SICK OF YOUR IGNORANCE!!!"

I told her calmly what I'd been thinking, and then she nodded without apology. This was 6 years ago.

My boss told me later if she'd been me, she would have cried. Hey BETTY, if you're reading this, you may have been at the forefront of the women's movement, but you're NOT a mind-reader!! *gives Betty raspberry* Plthlbt!

13. Just for that,
:loveya:

"Lookin' back on the track for a little green bag,
Got to find just the kind or I'm losin' my mind

Out of sight in the night out of sight in the day,
Lookin' back on the track gonna do it my way.

Out of sight in the night out of sight in the day,
Lookin' back on the track gonna do it my way.
Lookin' back

Lookin' for some happiness
But there is only loneliness to find
Jump to the left, turn to the right
Lookin' upstairs, lookin' behind, yeah!

Lookin' for some happiness
But there is only loneliness to find
Jump to the left, turn to the right
Lookin' upstairs, lookin' behind.

Lookin' back on the track for a little green bag,
Got to find just the kind or I'm losin' my mind

Out of sight in the night out of sight in the day,
Lookin' back on the track gonna do it my way.

Lookin' back on the track for a little little green bag,
Got to find just the kind or I'm losin' my mind,
Alright.

Lookin' for some happiness
But there is only loneliness to find
Jump to the left, turn to the right
Lookin' upstairs, lookin' behind.

Pa pa pa pa pa pa ...."

imagine what she was like at the end if she was this way to you six years ago. I keep praying I won't be a bitter person when I get old but as bitter as I already am at this age it isn't looking good.

It sounds like it was a book signing event. I would have returned the book and demand a full refund because I couldn't learn anything from such a witch.

Before she started screaming at me, I did get her autograph on my copy of "The Feminine Mystique". Then I sssloooowly backed away.

My boss, who was a great deal shyer than me, was shaking a little. But she was also there when my FAVORITE cartoonist, Doug Marlette, showed up. THAT booksigning went really well!

23. Now that is bizarre
It could have been that she was reacting from her own experiences and impressions of young people from meeting them at booksignings and the like on previous occasions -although even then I'd see her reaction was ummm...a bit extreme to put it mildly -but to actually yell before you even had the chance to talk -now that's just weird. Certainly gives you an interesting story to tell

screaming at me for the "look on my face". A girl walked by wearing a "Girls Kick Ass" T-Shirt, and Betty gave her the thumbs-up while I was like "What'd I do?" :o Eek!

then I broke up with the guy I had taken to the lecture!

I was so evil back then.

OTOH, she was pretty intense to start with.

I'm assuming Molly Yard and GLoria Steinem never screamed at you. ;)

40. Anthony Kiedis once told me to "fuck off"
Edited on Fri Aug-25-06 11:13 AM by SteppingRazor
But, no, no screaming from Betty Freidan. Kiedis is the only famous person who ever mouthed off to me -- if memory serves me correctly.

OH! Wayne Brady once hung up on me.

I think that's it, though there could be more.

42. It was sometime in the spring of 2000, I believe...
Edited on Fri Aug-25-06 11:37 AM by SteppingRazor
on the Foo Fighters/Red Hot Chili Peppers Tour. I was in my last year of college, and worked as a local roadie at the college's football stadium, basketball center and other performance venues. Basically, we'd serve as extra hands for the roadies whenever an act came to town. I roadied for a bunch of stuff -- 311, Widespread Panic, hell even the freaking Promise Keepers, which was actually the largest show I worked.

Anyway, I was working the Foo Fighters/Chili Peppers show, which was a pretty big production and I worked my ass off all day, mostly doing jobs the roadies didn't want to do -- hauling around heavy stuff, etc. When it was all done, I was backstage chugging down a water, looking grimy and tired. The Foo Fighters came by toward the stage to go on. I yelled, "Have a good show, guys!" Dave Grohl said, "Thanks, man!" They went on stage and kicked ass.

So, the Chili Peppers come out, and I say the same thing to them -- "have a good show!" Kiedis replies, very nonchalantly, "Fuck you. We will."

I think I just stood there with my mouth hanging open. I mean, it was so uncalled for, and I had just worked my ass off for this show all day. I debated slinging my water bottle at him, but given who he is and all, I figured that would end badly for me. So I went out into the crowd once their set had started and lobbed the bottle at him from the safety of the masses. And then I crowd-surfed.

The end.

I'd love to think he said "thank you" & you'd misheard it, but I'm also perfectly aware that some people have horrible manners. :wow:

44. that sucks
this is a funny story that might make you feel better about it. I saw an interview with Roseanne Barr a while back and she said that she got into a 12 step program for some addiction and she had to make amends for bad stuff she did and one of the things she used to do was make prank calls to celebrities. The interviewer asked her if anyone had refused to 'forgive' her and she said that Anthony Kiedis had. She said she had called his house one night and left a message on his answering machine with a fake British accent and pretended to be some groupie he had slept with at a show and said she had his child and she wanted the child to know his father, and then hung up.

She said when she made the apology he just looked at her and said "My girlfriend broke up with me over that" and walked away. He was still really pissed. I guess what goes around comes around.
