15. I was an RT for years!
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 10:09 AM by cmt928
ARRT 1970 - 1994. Only worked in it from 1970 to 76, but kept license up until CEUs were beginning to be required for continued active license. No local hospitals or community colleges offered any courses for an RT, so I let license expire.

I loved x-ray - still remember almost everything I learned in anatomy, positioning, physics, etc.

Where you located? I still know some RTs in Florida?

On Edit: Oops, didn't read far enough down - don't know anybody in PA - AZ or FL I could give you recommendations to talk to people. Sorry about what is happening - and the medical field is tough partly because of the greedy insurance companines, that hospitals are running lean (and mean sometimes)becasue of them!

16. I remember back in the late 70's that was a skill in high demand
My parents were always telling that before I was going to graduate high school and I always saw about eight to ten ads in the classifieds everyday for X-ray techs. The times have changed it seems.

20. As high demand as it was back then....
...I never saw it advertised on TV like the truck driving and computer programming schools were back then.
Good luck to you though. Having some knowledge in any type of medical training can even land you work with insurance companies if you could stand working for a bunch of crooks. An ex girlfriend of mine was paid very well because she was a dental tech one time which they (a major insurance carrier) said qualified her to make serious and major decisions on finding ways how not to pay medical claims.

21. i'm on the other end of that....
i find ways to make insurance companies pay claims. That was sometimes a difficult job, but I liked the billing more than x-ray.

17. totally cool....
well I worked 5 years hospital setting, ER, OR, and the rest, then 3 years in a chiro office, doing mainly desk, billing, and x-ray anyone who needed it, then went to dental office job, and an occasional x-ray job to cover for someone working a private office, they paid me only $9.00 an hour which was ridiculously low, and I said to hell with this, and didn't do that anymore. I love to talk shop though...and since hubby still does it that happens a lot. I hate getting credits, always wait to last minute and fry my brain on reading and taking tests. We have a large circle of friends, between the several hospitals we worked at, and he is now in an outpatient center. Who knows what will happen when the debt reduction act kicks in, since outpatient imaging will have to take losses.

You still know positioning? Wow! I think I would have to use my student pocket notebook, or merrill's at this point. I only remember the inverse square law, I guess that's the most important. LOL.

x-ray for many years, and did medical office work, billing, etc., but can't even find a job in that...hubby has extensive x-ray background, with college degree, and can't find anything better for him.

6. That blows.
I think people as smart as you and your husband are needed in some parts of the country.

Have you considered relocating?

8. here goes the saga
oh my gosh, well her goes the saga....I had a part time job I loved, my mom and babysitter became terminally ill, and I had to quit my job. Hubby's job was going pretty well, so after 3 years of looking we finally found a home, and bought it. Then the gas prices went up, and this year his company said no cost of living and no merit raises. It totally screwed us up, living on such a tight budget. That's what brought me here to DU. I posted about middle class america. Even if I found a job...the daycares here have no openings and they are expensive. after settling into our new home, I would feel bad moving the kids. Well, we're managing for now. If we had to move, we would consider it.

13. How close to a metropolitan center?
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 02:02 AM by Chan790
I know here in Hartford (because my cousin is a surgical RN) they have so much need and such a high rate of turnover that they never stop vetting candidates for radiological techs. They don't advertise though because they don't have to...they're up to ears in applicants. They strongly prefer a secondary skill or experience such as radiologic medicine(I think that's right...administering anti-cancer radiation in any case), CT, MRI or other imaging technologies.

I just grabbed Sunday's jobs section...of 113 "healthbeat" jobs listed, 19 were radiologic.

I'd think that situation would be true of most, if not all, urban centers. It's true in NYC, I know that because I get the NYTimes classifieds as well. If on the other hand, you're in flyover country, I don't know how much need there is.

Edited to add: Good Luck. I just returned the jobforce as well after 20 months and I ended up having to leave my field to do so. :( I know how hard it is.

14. philly would be the ....
closest and that's 2 hours away. He knows CT, X-ray, and MRI, knows the computer appliactions part of the job, a hot market, if you can find it, with a bachelors degree, and a manager presently. hershey would be another larger facility, that's 1.5 hrs away.
