weren't they confined to a "free-speech zone" 30 miles or so away?

4. I thought taht was only at colleges
Like mine, where the "Free Speech Zone" was a 100ft square concrete cut off from the rest of campus by a street on the north, a busy bus lane and windowless dorm facade on the south and east. Well, at least people going to the book store and the health center could hear protests. It was tehre for "safety reasons." The fact of the matter was that the main danger lay in the University President having to hear protesters right outside his window. See, the natural place for protests was in the quadrangle surrounded by a chain fence suspended on short poles--right in front of the office of the president in the Administration building. Clearly, protests could be contained in the large area set off from sidewalks by the small but evident fence. But "safety" was the reson given.

"Free Speech areas" are the opposite; they are limiting speech areas. They are mainly for squelching unpopular sentiment, yet they seem to be upheld constantly. The effect at my school was that students just never protested anything. not that it would have mattered an iota; if 100% of students, faculty, and staff were to favor something the president was against, his one voice overruled all others. These free speech areas are very effective-for taking voices away from people.

7. Here's another nice one.

Protesters line the street outside of a fundraiser for President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election campaign, in Albany, N.Y., Tuesday, July 29, 2003. Gov. George Pataki and Dorothy ``Doro'' Bush Koch were the star attractions for the $1,000-a-person evening reception at the Armory Center, a facility housing a large auto dealership, restaurants and shops.
